About This Event

Dance photography is about more than capturing a beautiful pose—it's about creating images that showcase strength, artistry, emotion, and movement. In this hands-on workshop, photographers will learn how to work confidently with dancers of all ages and skill levels while creating impactful portraits that stand out.Participants will learn how to direct dancers safely and effectively, capture movement with intention, design flattering lighting setups, and create compelling images that tell a story. From understanding dance fundamentals to building dynamic compositions, this workshop provides practical techniques that can be immediately applied in both studio and location settings.Whether you're new to photographing dancers or looking to elevate your current work, you'll leave with the knowledge and confidence to create dance portraits that are both technically strong and artistically meaningful.By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to communicate more effectively with dancers using fundamental dance terminology, pose dancers safely while emphasizing strong lines, extension, and technique, and capture movement with greater precision and impact. Attendees will learn how to create lighting setups that enhance shape, form, and emotion while developing stronger compositions that tell a story through movement. They will gain practical skills for photographing dancers in both studio and location settings and leave with strategies for building a distinctive and profitable dance photography offering that serves dancers, studios, and families.Attendees should bring their camera, a lens suitable for portrait photography (I recommend 2.8 or faster, but it is not required), fully charged batteries, memory cards, and a notebook or device for taking notes. Participants are encouraged to bring a camera with manual exposure controls and a basic understanding of exposure settings. If available, attendees may also bring a laptop or tablet for image review and editing exercises. All lighting equipment and dance models will be provided for instructional and demonstration purposes.
