What you should know:

You should consider a Business Owner’s Policy if you:

  • Own or lease the building at which you work and need to the property
  • Need general liability insurance coverage
  • Have business equipment such as camera gear, computers, printers furniture
  • Have employees who could act dishonestly or have access to steal clients' property

BOPs do NOT cover the following:

  • Claims, including those arising from professional services you perform.
  • Client damages if you provide inaccurate or incomplete advice to a client
  • Workers’ Compensation claims (injuries to employees in the course of employment)
  • Owned auto’s used for business purposes

Properties covered by the Business Owner’s Policy (BOP):

Your BOP will cover buildings (rented or owned) as well as the contents inside a building. It also covers any business-owned items or items owned by a third party but kept temporarily in the care, custody or control of the business or business owner. Business property must usually be stored or kept in qualifying proximity of business premises (such as within 100 feet of the premises).

Examples of property covered by a BOP:

Your BOP will cover equipment such as cameras, lights, computers, etc.  But it will also cover you in case of business interruption by covering the loss of income resulting from a fire or covered peril that disrupts the operation of the business. The policy can also include extra-expense coverage, which is to recoup the costs of operating out of a temporary location while the damaged location is repaired.

These BOPs also provide General Liability coverage!

This protects you, the policy holder, from lawsuits caused by slip and fall accidents by a customer or third party, damage to a third party’s property, product liability and advertising injuries (copyright infringement). This is big, and this is why the Business Owner’s Policy for Photographers is so useful.
