About This Workshop

The Psychology of Portrait Direction: Creating Authentic Expressions in Headshots and PortraitsMost photography education focuses on lighting, posing, camera settings, and retouching. Yet many photographers discover that their greatest challenge is not technical. It is helping people feel comfortable enough to reveal who they truly are in front of the camera. In this engaging and practical workshop, portrait photographer Jola Bremer explores the psychology behind authentic expression and the emotional experience of being photographed. Participants will learn why otherwise confident people often become stiff, self-conscious, or overly posed when a camera is pointed at them, and how to guide subjects beyond those barriers.Drawing from years of experience photographing professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, and women navigating visibility and self-image, Jola introduces her framework of "Performing, Pleasing, and Protecting" — three common strategies people unconsciously adopt when they feel observed. Through discussion, live demonstrations, and real-world examples, photographers will learn how to recognize these behaviors and create conditions that encourage genuine connection and natural expression.Topics include:• Understanding the psychological impact of being photographed • Recognizing signs of self-monitoring and emotional tension • Building trust and rapport quickly • Using conversation and curiosity as directing tools • Creating movement that produces authentic expressions • Photographing beyond the pose • Selecting images that communicate personality, confidence, and presence • Live portrait demonstration and image reviewParticipants will leave with practical tools they can immediately apply to headshots, personal branding sessions, family portraits, and commercial assignments. More importantly, they will gain a deeper understanding of the human side of portrait photography and learn how to create images that feel less posed and more profoundly true.Ideal Audience: Portrait photographers, headshot photographers, wedding photographers, emerging professionals, and serious enthusiasts seeking to strengthen their ability to connect with subjects and create more authentic portraits.Format: 90-minute presentation, half-day workshop, or full-day educational program with live demonstrations.
