A Redefining of the Telephoto Zoom

Tamron's new SP 70-200mm VC G2 (Model A025) lens builds upon the A009 for next-generation telephoto photography.

Photographers who rely on Tamron's high-performance SP 70-200mm VC telephoto zoom lens (Model A009) as an integral part of their photography may not always be pondering how the lens could evolve to become an even more vital tool in their workflow. That forward thinking is Tamron's job, and the company's behind-the-scenes labors have now resulted in the next-generation SP 70-200mm F/2.8 VC USD G2 lens (Model A025).

Think a reimagined telephoto with significantly faster autofocus, enhanced optics, reinforced Vibration Compensation (VC) functions, and an abundance of new engineering and design features to work with full-frame and APS-C DSLR cameras. The new model will boost creativity and exceed photographers' expectations no matter what their specialty, from photojournalism and sports photography to wedding, fashion, and landscape images.

WHAT'S BEEN ENHANCED

• Improved optics: The A009's already stellar resolution and contrast reproduction is dramatically exceeded to match the resolution requirements of today's DSLR cameras. Background effects will benefit from the new model's refined bokeh, made possible thanks to the SP 70-200 G2’s circular diaphragm and nine blades. Plus, the use of XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements eliminate the chromatic aberrations that tend to plague high-speed telephoto shooting.

• The enhancement of Tamron's eBAND Coating: This proprietary coating—which melds a low-refractive-index nano-structured layer with traditional multi-layer coatings—has been optimized exclusively for this new model. The A025 user will enjoy reduced flare and ghosting thanks to the coating's anti-reflective properties, meaning crystal-clear images even when working with backlighting.

• Speedier autofocus: That USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor that allows for high-speed focusing? It's back, but even better. Optimized algorithms and a dedicated microcomputer have boosted the A009's focusing speed and accuracy. Plus, photographers shooting in AF can make fine focusing tweaks without switching modes thanks to the Full-time Manual Focus override feature.

• Vibration Compensation (VC) system: Whatever shooting conditions may be, the SP 70-200 G2 has three VC modes to choose from to ensure shake-free handheld photography even when shooting telephoto in low light. The best-in-class VC performance is equivalent to 5 full stops (using VC mode 3). A breakdown of the options: Mode 1 offers standard VC capabilities that balance the viewfinder image's stability and the stabilization effects; Mode 2 is perfect for panning; and Mode 3 makes the stabilization of captured images the priority.

• Shorter MOD (Minimum Operating Distance): Specifically, the A009's 50.7 inches has been substantially slashed to 37.4 inches. That means a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.1 is now possible, giving photographers more versatility as they try to maximize their creative expression.

WHAT'S NEW

With each successive lens generation, Tamron tries to sweeten the pot with new features, and the SP 70-200 G2 comes with an ample share, including:

• Full compatibility with two high-end teleconverters and Tamron's TAP-in Console accessory: Achieve 1.4x and 2.0x magnification with the Model TC-X14 and Model TC-X20 teleconverters, respectively. Meanwhile, the TAP-in Console offers a USB connection from the lens to a photographer's personal computer for easy firmware updates.

• Fluorine Coating: This coating addition makes cleaning the SP 70-200 G2 a snap thanks to the water- and oil-repellant fluorine compound that covers the front surface of the lens element. Dust, dirt, fingerprints—the SP 70-200 G2 will minimize all of the effects of these pesky photographic interlopers.

• Moisture-proof and dust resistant construction: Outdoor photographers will be pleased to find the SP 70-200 G2 can stand up to trips and treks in challenging environments. What keeps those water droplets or particles of dirt and dust out: the special sealant Tamron used on every one of the SP 70-200 G2’s joints and seams.

•Lightweight and easy-to-hold tripod mount is compatible with Arca-Swiss style quick release plates:

A new textured grip and Arca-Swiss style tripod interface enhances both speed and utility. Because the tripod mount is made of lightweight magnesium, it is much easier to carry.

Tamron engineers took all of these new and enhanced features and incorporated them into an updated and durable exterior, complete with a textured grip, newly designed lens hood, and metal-based barrel for better handling—a product update that masterfully integrates the new features into an aesthetically pleasing chassis that is the new SP design.
