Studio Pet Portraits: Photographing Dogs With Their Humans

October 30, 2025

In this studio session, NYC dog photographer Jen Hillenga photographs Zelda, a 10-year-old rescue, creating meaningful portraits that celebrate the bond between dog and owner. You’ll see how Jen quickly identifies motivation (treats), builds simple poses for connection on the floor and couch, and keeps safety first when using platforms or elevated props. Jen also breaks down her lighting approach—lowering the softbox to head level when subjects are seated, feathering for wrap, adding fill behind camera, and using a V-flat to either add or subtract light—plus why battery-powered strobes help keep cords off the floor.
