Better Photography Starts With Better Practice with Roberto Valenzuela

October 13, 2026

Better photography does not happen by accident. It comes from intentional, consistent practice.

In this episode of The Professional Photographer Podcast, photographer and educator Roberto Valenzuela shares how deliberate practice helped him turn posing and lighting from weaknesses into some of his strongest skills.

Roberto explains why client sessions should be treated as performances rather than practice. Instead of experimenting on paying clients, photographers can set aside focused time to strengthen specific skills until they become second nature. He recommends even 20 to 30 minutes of practice each week as a meaningful way to keep improving.

The episode also explores why posing is more than memorizing positions. Roberto encourages photographers to think in terms of body language, emotion, and the message the client wants to communicate.

Lighting works the same way. Roberto describes light as a communication tool that can shape a subject, guide the viewer’s eye, and reinforce a specific feeling instead of simply illuminating the scene.

From overcoming imposter syndrome to directing clients with more confidence and developing a stronger artistic vision, this conversation is a practical reminder that consistent practice creates more freedom behind the camera.
