Comfortable Carry

Younger photographers may never experience the aches and strains that their camera-wielding predecessors did as we lugged analog equipment in overweight shoulder bags. Fortunately, the surprisingly recent introduction of camera backpacks and camera roller bags are now the norm, undoubtedly extending countless careers and allowing photographers to work in comfort.

Manfrotto’s Pro Light Flexloader Backpack L weighs in at 6.61 pounds with interior dimensions of 10.24x5.91x18.50 inches and interchangeable dividers in the company’s signature black with red trim and interior padding. An adjustable-torso-height harness system, a pivoting waist belt, and shock-absorbing foam reinforcement extend the comfort created by the overall design. The bag’s expandable compartment between the main area and the laptop sleeve has plenty of room for large accessories without compromising the main compartment’s capacity.

While the bag has large storage compartments, it’s still small enough to fit airline standards for carry-on luggage. While you may have to check larger gear, it’s best to keep your cameras and lenses close during travel. It’s also good practice to fly with the camera bodies separated from lenses in the camera bag to avoid issues that could result from plane vibrations.

Easy-to-access and well protected laptop (up to 15 inches) and tablet compartments, as well as a tuck-away exterior strap system for tripods and stands, add to the functionality without compromising space. A great way to balance the load was by using one pocket for carbon fiber tripod legs and the other pocket for a water bottle. An included small pouch is designed to fit at the bottom of the main compartment, though it can be tucked in elsewhere or not used. Its two zippered pockets with elastic organizers are perfect for accessories ranging from portable SSDs and cables to power plug adapters for international travel and card readers.

A water-repellent coating on the RipStop nylon and polyester fabric exterior makes the bag resistant to moisture. The built-in fold-out rain protector creates a barrier to keep the wet outside and dry inside. This is vital when working in the great outdoors, where umbrellas are seldom a good option on hikes for wildlife and nature photography. It’s far more important to have hands free for an unexpected photo op or, on rough terrain, a good pair of hiking sticks. On excessively hot days, the silver side of the rain protector can deflect direct sunshine and prevent digital gear from overheating.

When back in civilization, the Flexloader trolley connection strap can slide over any standard trolley or luggage handle. The bag comes with a TSA padlock to secure a steel wire puller to close the main compartment. With expensive equipment, it’s better to err on the side of security.

The highly durable Manfrotto Pro Light Flexloader Backpack L is a great fit for travel photographers, and its suggested price of $349.99 will help save the back without breaking the bank.
