I opened my first studio 23 years ago in a small town. By joining our state affiliation and PPA I learned a lot. Working in a small town let me do all types of photography - but my true love was high school seniors. Our studio would photograph about 400 a year - all full sessions - with only myself and a sales person. Times have certainly changed! The nice thing is our studio is now doing all types of photography again - with only me as the sole employee. I love photographing people - love every part of our industry. I hope to be able to do it for many more years.

Home State: Florida
Home District: Southeast
Qualification: PO

Joe Campanellie's introduction to photography happened quite by accident when he picked up a friend's camera and began to "play" one day. From the moment he developed his first roll of film to his first black and white print, he was "hooked." Joe began his career working for his dad as a custom printer and a commercial and aerial photographer. Over the years his attention turned to portrait and wedding photography. For more than 30 years, Joe built a reputation as one off Maryland's premier portrait photographers.

With his recent move to Florida it has allowed him to return to one of his first great loves...nature photography. What began as an exercise to rekindle his lost passion in photography became so much more to him personally, professionally, and creatively. What began as a series of self assignments to avoid total creative burnout has now become a body of work that defines him as the photographer he is today. Joe received the Master of Photography Degree in 1996 and the Photographic Craftsman Degree in 1998. In 2010, Joe was awarded the prestigious Fellowship Degree from the American Society of Photographers (ASP). As of this date there are only 88 living photographers worldwide to have completed the thesis and portfolio requirements for this highly honored degree.

Joe has been the recipient of both the SEPPA and PPA's National Award for service. He has received the ASP Gold Medallion Award, PPA Imaging Excellence Award and Imaging Excellence Bar for 26 loan prints. Joe has attained Diamond Photographer of the Year 4 times and Platinum and Gold Medalist 3 times each. Since the inception of the Grand Imaging Awards he has 2 third place trophies and has placed 5 images in the top 10.

He has won 33 Kodak Gallery Awards including 2 Kodak Gallery Elite Awards and the Canon Par Excellence at the Southeast District. Joe's images have been on display at the Epcot Exhibit in Orlando, Florida, the "America The Beautiful" exhibit at Dulles Airport in Virginia and the Washington Cathedral. Besides his many national and international accolades through the PPA and ASP, Joe's work has been recognized by several local art and photographic associations as well as having been on the covers of Sun and Surf and Flagler Magazine. He has also been featured in the Palm Coast Observer and Old City Life Magazine in a number of articles highlighting some of his professional and artistic accomplishments. His photography has won several Best of Show awards in juried photography shows with the Flagler County Art League and the St. Augustine Camera Club. He is currently one of the top selling artists at several local art galleries. Joe maintains an active speaking and judging schedule, addressing professional photography organizations, schools, and seminars, plus Joe conducts workshops throughout the country on a variety of subjects.

Bob found that each genre informs the other and the cross pollination of skills needed in each helped the other become better.

Coates started his official pro career after picking up and putting down a camera for the previous Thirteen years. Based in the Caribbean for the first three years of business Bob concentrated on commercial photography. He was dragged kicking and screaming into the wedding side of the business and then embraced weddings. Upon his move to Sedona, Arizona to get out of the path of hurricanes weddings were mixed with some commercial work. Coming full circle Bob is back to concentrating on commercial projects, portraiture and creating an art décor line and leaving weddings behind.

Articles for magazines and books authored by Bob are part of how he gives back to the photographic community. In addition, Bob has presented programs from Hawaii to the Caribbean including National platforms at Imaging USA and other venues. Judging local and International print competitions is another way Bob has shares his expertise in the industry.

Coates has always believed in giving back to the local community using his photographic skills. Among many community projects there were a couple notable ones. A calendar based on the movie Calendar Girls that raised money and garnered lots of community awareness and National press for the Sedona Arts Center. He also photographed, designed, printed and sold a calendar for the Sedona Community Center raising almost $10,000 for the Meals on Wheels program.

I have been judging for over 20 years, and like most of us, I got started with local PPA affiliates. I learned how to judge by watching judges at the state and district levels. I have always bought our loan books and general collection books and studied the images to help me better understand why an image reached the merit category. Our main focus, at Garrison Photography, is senior and family portraiture. We have been in business for over 30 years. My passion in photography is in "Character Studies." I love photographing people as they really are--the everyday working life of people and their craft. I am like most of you who got into photography for the passion of our industry. After years of the everyday grind, I decided that I wanted more out of my job. With this in mind, I realized that Print Competition is the only time that I have total control over my image and what the outcome of it is. Through Print Competition we have total control over the lighting, composition and the story it tells, along with the other 12 elements that we use to judge an image. To me, Print Competition is an escape from our everyday world, and I am in charge. Print Competition allows us to explore what's in our hearts and on our minds. It allows us to record our perception of the world. If you're new to Print Competition, I would suggest; Do what you love to do. Learn the rules which prints are judged by. Follow those rules until you have them mastered. Then step out of the box and develop your own style. Print competition is not designed to make us all cookie-cutter photographers, but rather the opposite. Develop your own style, your niche, find out what turns your on button, on, and pursue that. My advice to all of us is to never let our successes or failures prevent us from continually entering. It's not about the trophies or hardware you win, it's about achieving a higher level of expertise. It's a learning experience on steroids.

In graduating from RISP in 1976 I started my career working for Gainsboro studio in Salem MA. After 2 years there I then opened Green Photography in Plymouth MA in 1979. We specialized in Portrait/Wedding/corporate photography with many school contracts over the years. In 2004 we moved the studio to a small adjacent town called Carver and adjusted our style for a more boutique atmosphere. Current the studio specializes in a more artistic style portraiture. Though I may not do full weddings I still do many smaller celebrations. Additionally I teach photography to beginners and advanced alike. The name of my school is Camera Art Academy. Photography has been a passion in both my business and private life I love to share my knowledge and learn from others. My formal training at Brooks Institute gave me a firm photographic foundation to build on. Upon graduating as Outstanding Student of the Year, I returned to a small Midwestern community where I serviced a wide spectrum of photographic needs. Over the years I have produced a variety of tabletop catalog images for a range of companies from Napa Auto Parts, back to school clothing for the May Company, sports equipment for Schutt Manufacturing and International Fastner Inc. Dealing with clientele from Chicago to St Louis, photographing eye surgery in the morning, to being lowered into the cyclone furnace of an Illinois power plant in the afternoon. I have photographed architectural assignments hanging from the open door of a helicopter high above downtown St Louis while soothing a terrified art director. Photographing events from San Francisco to New York to Switzerland has taught me to roll with the punches, change directions on the run, deal with art directors, mother in-laws, spoiled brides and flower girls diplomatically. My photographic experience includes 35mm, medium, large format (4x5 - 8x10), film and digital capture. I have taught week long intensive training courses ranging from basic lighting, basic professional photography, tabletop catalog production, large format 4x5-8x10 view camera usage and commercial lighting, for the Professional Photographers of America's Continuing Educational System for almost 20 years. I have traveled extensively through out the United States as an International Judge for the Professional Photographers of America's Photographic Exhibition Committee for almost 20 years. The professional contacts that I have established over 39 years of involvement with photographic associations through out the country has provided me with a strong foundation of resources.
