The Northern Catskills here in New York is the area that was the subject of the min-19th century Hudson River School painters and has some of the most beautiful waterfalls in NYS in my opinion. This workshop will focus on one of the largest waterfalls, the Kaaterskill Waterfall, and the stream feeding the falls. If you love the wispy cotton candy look of water, then this is the workshop for you. I will work with you on the best exposure times for moving water and use of neutral density filters to increase the exposure up to 30-60 seconds. Since we will be shooting longer exposures ½ to 30 seconds a tripod should be used. We will go over the best metering for cascades and waterfalls and when you may want to shoot multiple exposures for high lights and shadows and merging in post. As far as lens focal lengths I would recommend wide angle to telephoto along with a polarizing filter and neutral density filters. If you do not have neutral density filters do not worry, I will have some you can borrow. We will be parking in main parking lot and starting from the observation deck that yields a great angle looking down onto the full falls. From there we will hike a short distance along the stream that feeds the falls working on small cascades and possibly reflections depending on the light. Then after lunch, we can hike down to the base of the falls on the newly constructed trail with steps. It is much easier now with the steps than before and we will take it slow with rest stops along the way. Plan on packing drinks and snacks/lunch since we will not be leaving the area for lunch. At the end of the day if we like we can hit a local restaurant outside of the park for a meal. By taking this workshop you should come away with a good understanding on what is the best shutter speed to give you the results you are looking for and how to meter the subject.
