Did you get the memo? Film is making a comeback in a big way! Whether it's for the aesthetic and look that only film provides or the search for something different to distinguish you from the crowd, many photographers are going "back to basics" and embracing film photography for both personal and professional work. Film companies are actually introducing new film stocks, and there are a variety of manufacturers introducing new and exciting cameras from 35mm to large format. Shooting and processing film is not as difficult as you might think--after all, what else did photographers have for the first 140 years of the art form? Nearly everything digital photography does (including Photoshop!) has its origin in an analog process. In fact, the defacto standards, "The Camera," "The Negative" and "The Print" by Ansel Adams remain as relevant in the digital world as they did when they were written based on film techniques. The key difference is, a digital camera makes some or most of the technical--and even artistic--decisions for you, whereas with film, you are in charge of the entire process. But when you add it up, the amount of time and money spent doing analog work and digital work are roughly the same. And film cameras aren't impacted by the global supply chain and microchip shortages like new digital cameras are. The course will be taught by Michael Boatright, who made the conscious decision in January 2021 to pivot his pandemic-impacted portrait photography business back to film. He originally learned photography and darkroom from his dad--who was also a professional photographer and who used to shoot college football games with a Speed Graphic 4x5 press camera--over 50 years ago, but like most, has been shooting mostly digitally for the past 20+ years. Like many film photographers, his darkroom is his studio bathroom, and he will show how easy and approachable processing and scanning or printing your own film can be. Topics will include film and film camera basics, light metering, analog workflow (including setting up your own home "darkroom" and simple processing of your own black and white film), and scanning, post-processing, and printing (both darkroom wet, digital printing and alternative printing techniques). If you are looking for something to reignite your photographic creativity or just interested in learning something different, then this is the course for you!
