You have seen those cool light paintings that bring a magical light to a scene. It’s time for you to learn how lens-based artists make these stunning images. Register now for this fun, hands-on light painting workshop. Don't pass on this rare opportunity to photograph in a car barn filled with restored trolleys. Embrace your curiosity to explore. James is a certified professional photographer and frequent gallery exhibitor. He is excited that we will have this time together to step through the complete process of light painting and post-processing. Our day will start with a discussion of the philosophy, techniques, and tools fundamental to the artistic application of light. With the basics in mind, we will then enter the car barn and help each other paint trolleys with light and capture sets of images. After a 45-minute lunch break, we'll move to a classroom to perform magic in Photoshop. We'll work extensively on layering, blending, and manipulating our images to produce fine art composites. We will wrap by sharing our favorite images and discussing our artistic visions for the works.
Logistics
Please arrive no later than 7:45 AM for check-in and meet and greet. There is ample free parking. The location charges an admission fee of $10 per person. This fee is not included in your registration and will be collected at check-in. The workshop will start promptly at 8:00 AM. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own snacks, lunch, and beverages. Nearby food options are approximately 10 minutes by car from the facility.
What to Bring
To participate effectively in the light painting portion in the morning, students need a camera, lenses (zooms covering 14-70mm range recommended), sturdy tripod, batteries, memory cards, and note-taking materials. Students with constant lights are encouraged to bring and share their equipment during the workshop.
To participate effectively in the post-processing portion in the afternoon, students need a laptop with Lightroom and Photoshop installed (latest Creative Cloud versions recommended), a pen tablet (if using), and a card reader to transfer their images. If your laptop has a runtime of fewer than 3 hours, a power strip with an extension cord is advised.
Definition
Light Painting is an artform where artificial lights are used to illuminate parts of a scene while the shutter of a camera is left open for an extended duration. The aim of light painting is to intentionally isolate parts of a scene by lighting what we want to see and throwing the other areas into darkness. We will achieve this aim through a combination of lighting techniques to make multiple exposures and then combining these exposures in post using primarily blend modes and layer masks in photoshop.
