Ready to broaden your natural light photography by adding your own light? Have you attended that class filled with equipment and models and felt overwhelmed? Are you letting that expensive speedlight gather dust in the back of your closet? If you answered yes to any of these questions, register now – this introduction to flash photography is for you. In this workshop, we will start with the basics of "bringing your own light" to a subject. Your instructor is a certified professional photographer known for his ability to make challenging topics understandable. The workshop's atmosphere will be fun and interactive where no question is dumb. James will ensure everyone leaves with an actionable grasp of the fundamentals. It's high time to dust off that flash and make room for it in your camera bag!
Our day will start with a discussion of the philosophy, principles, techniques, and tools fundamental to effective and artful use of flash. We will discuss the fundamentals of various flash settings including manual mode, through-the-lens (TTL) metering, high speed sync (HSS), head direction, bounce, modifiers, triggers, and more. After a 45-minute lunch break, we'll move outside to work with flash to achieve dramatic effects by isolating our subjects by working with various settings, flash modifiers and techniques. We will experiment with creating light and shadows by moving the flash off-camera. We will wrap by exploring some post-processing techniques, sharing our favorite images, and discussing different artistic visions in our works.
What to Bring
Students need a camera, lens (zoom or prime around 100mm recommended), batteries, memory cards, and note taking materials. You are expected to have enough skills and experience to operate your camera in manual mode.
Built-in flash will not suffice for this workshop. Each student must have a professional hot-shoe mounted detachable flash unit. You must have access to a hot-shoe mounted flash unit compatible with your camera model and capable of manual mode, through-the-lens (TTL) metering, and high-speed sync (HSS). HSS may be called by other names. For example, Nikon calls it "Auto-FP."
Students are encouraged to bring transmitters/triggers, radio-capable flashes, or hot-shoe extension cables with them.
Please arrive no later than 8:45 AM for check in and meet and greet. There is ample free parking. The workshop will start promptly at 9:00 AM. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own snacks, lunch, and beverages. Nearby food options are approximately 5 minutes by car.
If you have any questions, please contact your instructor.
