Posing Children

Dennis Craft M.Photog.Hon.M.Photog.Cr., CPP, API,F-ASP

They’re not grumpy teens; they’re not in the terrible two’s. Children ages 5-12 might be considered in the “golden ages” of child photography. They can understand what you want, listen to instructions and, in general, work with you for a successful session. In this video class, Dennis Craft teaches you how to capitalize on that to capture the best images possible…and increase your sales opportunities!

Dennis first explores prepping for the session, from consultations where you figure out what mom wants, to ensuring you are ready to go (lights, white balance and all) the moment your subjects enter the studio. Once the session has started, Dennis demonstrates and discusses what you should do, including…

  • Using simple props.
  • Getting variety in your images with different poses, expressions, angles and distances.
  • Engaging the kids (if they’re not on your side, you WILL lose).
  • Working with siblings (even in the “don’t touch me!” stages).
  • Understanding the tricks of the trade when posing girls vs. boys.

By the time you’re done, you’ll feel like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, and kids and Mom will follow your lead!

We value your feedback and want to know how we can improve. Please share your thoughts about the class here.

Dennis Craft Bio

Dennis Craft runs a successful portrait studio in the historic town of Marshall, MI. His work includes many photographic areas, but he is best known for his imaginative children's photography. Craft Photography opened in 1979 in a storefront in downtown Marshall. Since 1999, the studio has been outside the city on thirteen acres that serve as a perfect backdrop for their fanciful child portraiture.

A Michigan Top-Ten Photographer twelve times, Dennis enjoys working in a natural light situation (window light and environmental portraits are his specialties). Twelve of his merit prints have been selected into the International Loan Collection, three exhibited at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center, and one was on display in the International Photography Hall of Fame. Craft was named Photographer of the Year in Michigan (1992 & 1996). He’s also earned his PPA Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees and the Fellowship Degree from the American Society of Photographers. In addition, he is a past president of PPA.

Dennis has spoken in many places over the years, including national, state, and regional conventions and numerous local affiliate events. This doesn’t even include all the photography schools he’s taught at, like Winona International School of Photography, West Coast School, MAIPP Professional Photography School, Mid-Atlantic Regional School of Photography, Texas School, and Georgia School! Students from all over the country have enjoyed his unique teaching style and his practical solutions and ideas for developing and improving their own photographic style.
