About the Class

A composite is about bringing disconnected pieces together and connecting them. The finished image looks effortless, but a lot goes into the process. PPA instructor Richard Sturdevant shares his expertise as he guides you, step-by-step, through the elements of a composite.

You’ll start off discussing key aspects like controlling light, adding emotion, making each piece tell a story and even workflow aspects like managing, organizing and storing folders and files.

Then, drill down into the details as Richard examines:

  • Parts and pieces: Discuss choosing the parts for the composite, the importance of retouching individually, and managing color harmony.
  • Background: Your background is the constant; learn how to darken and lighten where needed, add color and manage the atmosphere.
  • Individual subjects: Adding the pieces is critical. Richard explores how to place subjects, all the options you can incorporate to make your subject stand out. He’ll discuss the use of texture, lighting, shadows, highlights and inner glow. Even sweat helps make your image more believable!

No piece is complete without the finishing touches! Learn the layers, overlays and lighting, the drama, emotion and movement that will bring your story to life!
