What We Do
Copyright Protection and Advocacy from PPA
PPA is the only professional photographic association with a full-time, dedicated Copyright & Government Affairs department. Our staff is active in lobbying Congress on copyright and health insurance reform, educating photographers about copyright issues, and copyright protection for your work.
Photography Copyright Member Assistance
The Copyright & Government Affairs staff is available to work with members on a one-on-one basis to obtain positive results from unfortunate incidents of photograph copyright infringement committed by clients, retailers, and news media. By opening the lines of communication, our photographers are able to negotiate monetary compensation, in-kind service exchanges, or see that their image is no longer used without proper permissions. Just contact PPA for image copyright assistance.
Resources For You
PPA’s tool kits, template forms and sample letters give photographers the resources needed to protect and enforce their photography copyrights. Visit the Copyright Resources page to download a copy of the latest Copyright Kit and Copyright Insert, which will help you educate clients and give tips on copyright protection.
Advocacy At Large
PPA's advocacy efforts include working closely with the U.S. Copyright Registration Office and Congress to support photographers' rights. PPA has always worked behind the scenes to ensure your interests are protected. In 1995, PPA led the movement to establish Industry Standards for Copyright Protection, working with associations representing photo finishers, labs and industry suppliers.
In the Federal Courts, PPA has acted, in selected cases, to establish precedents and to uphold photographer's rights to the public and the industry. These include precedent-setting cases against Eckerd Drugs of Texas and Linn Photo.
In the media, PPA educates consumers and journalists about the rights of photographers.
