Vital Signs: Testing the Waters with New Vendors

Dear PPA Member,

Sea monkeys.

You know exactly which advertisement I'm thinking about. The one in the back of the comic book. The one that whispered: "Buy this kit, and grow your own sea monkeys! It's the latest rage! It'll be magical!" Yes, that one.

When I was six, I wanted that thriving ocean of marine life in a bowl. Badly. I mailed off my saved-up money, waited for what seemed like forever (at that age, forever is a few weeks), got the package, followed the instructions, and...nothing. It was a dud. Cloudy water, no sea monkeys.

Sometimes trying a new vendor ends up being a "sea monkey experience," so this week's Vital Signs is about navigating the vast waters full of products and services for photographers. There are some really unique items on the market right now--but even though the product or service may seem perfect, there are steps you need to take to ensure that it's the right mix for you. With a little planning, a little advice, and some common sense, it can be smooth sailing as you find something to make your business stand out.
