Vital Signs: Catering to Your Clients - PPA Today

Vital Signs: Catering to Your Clients

Dear PPA Member,

Jacques Pepin is a world-renowned chef known for his amazing French cuisine creations. I'm sure that he can make a mean carne asada burrito, but if I have an opportunity to have him whip something up in the kitchen for me, it's going to be something French. He's known for that. I want him to do what he does best if I'm going to be his client.

Hands up--who is a photographer who specializes in every type of photography? As much as we'd all like to be successful in everything, it's got to be difficult to be a successful wedding/industrial/fine arts/commercial/pet photographer, isn't it? Your clients are different, and you have to be different for each type of client.

Much like Monsieur Pepin and his overall culinary talent, I know many successful photographers who probably could be an "I can shoot everything" photographer. However, focusing on one or two specialties allows them to cater to their clientele and become wildly sought after because of their expertise.

Still, there are aspects of business that every photographer needs to understand, regardless of specialty. We've reached out to some PPA members this week to share their knowledge with you. Bon appétit!
