Why do you love photography? 1. Capturing precious moments in time for myself and others. 2. Telling stories without words. 3. Learning to see differently. 4. Learning & evolving. 5. It was my dream since childhood to be a photographer. 6. Because this is how I provided for my family for four decades. Blessed.

Pre-con_1080x1080.jpg
Your 3-day All-Access Pass to Imaging USA gets you into dozens of incredible photography classes during the regular days of the convention, January 14 -16, 2018 in Nashville. These programs are included at no extra cost with your All-Access Pass. But if you're looking for even more photography education opportunities, Imaging USA has you covered with Pre-Convention programs!

Pre-convention (a.k.a. pre-con) takes place on-site and right before Imaging USA, from January 11 -13. While these programs do require an additional fee to attend, many photographers find the much smaller class size and the ability to get one-on-one attention from the instructors well worth the small add-on cost.

Pre-con programs range from multi-day workshops to half- and all-day classes on topics like post-processing workflow, fashion portraiture, the certification process, the business of senior photography, and more!

There are also Hands-On classes, which take you on a photoshoot with the instructor to practice the skills you are taught with your camera right there on the spot! These classes are designed so you can attend multiple sessions during the day and get all the hands-on practice you want.

Pricing structure this year:
  • Full-day pre-con classes cost $159

And Hands-On classes are available in tiers:
  • 1 Hands-On class costs $99.00
  • 2 Hands-On classes cost $159.00
  • 3 Hands-On classes cost $199.00

So, as you prepare for the world's largest pro-photography convention, check out some of these Pre-Convention classes that may interest you:

Kristi Elias, M.Photog.M.Artist.Cr

Al Audleman, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, API
January 11-13, 9am - 5pm
Planning to take the Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) exam? Before you do, why not take this intensive class, covering all the technical topics on the exam? This Certification Prep Class isn't for the faint of heart- it's an in-depth study of the technical side of photography, almost equivalent to a semester of college! You'll work hard and study hard, but you'll also walk away a more polished, knowledgeable, confident professional.

Richard Newell, M.Photog.Cr
Christie Newell, M.Photog.Cr., CPP
January 12, 9am - 5pm
Rich and Christie will take you through the journey of making a merit image, showing you why competition is an investment in yourself and your business. Learn how to choose your images, what categories they should be entered in, the specifications for your print case, and how to register your case online. You'll also learn how your images are judged, and go over the "12 elements of a merit image" in depth, which will help you create your own merit-worthy image.

Tony Corbell, Cr.Photog., API
January 13, 9am - 11am
This class is all about understanding and controlling light quality. Tony will go over all types of lighting and tools with an in-depth and specific focus on studio lighting. Nate Peterson, M.Photog., CPP

Twitter: npdp
Instagram: npdesignphoto

Sponsored By: White House Custom Colour

As a child, Nate Peterson was constantly doodling, never knowing this artistic talent would shape his career path. Formally trained in graphic design and visual communications, Nate then added photography to the mix and, with the introduction of the digital camera, fell in love with the craft.

Since then, he's been on a life-changing, nation-wide crash course, training with the leaders of the industry through PPA and state and local affiliates, WPPI, After Dark Education, and more, with the goal of becoming the premier portrait artist in his area. Nate's career has skyrocketed and with that, the expansion of his studio's personalized services, professional abilities, and boutique product options.

Today, Nate Peterson Design & Photography specializes in contemporary high school Senior portraits, sentimental family portraits, commercial product photography, and edgy sports images, based on the belief that a portrait is an artistic expression of its subject. Outside of his studio, Nate strives to help others find their photographic paths and stays active as a member of the American Society of Photographers, the Twin Cities PPA (where he served as a 2016 Board Member), the Wisconsin PPA, and the Indianhead WPPA Affiliate.

Speaker Sessions:
Mon., Jan. 15
8 - 9:30am The Grand Experience Experiment (Business, Inspiration)

Q&A:

What did you want to be as a kid when you grew up? A Disney animator
What was your first concert? Aerosmith. Floor tickets. Tripped on a wire track on the way in running toward the front row, but held my balance. Got crushed in the front against the gate for the next 2-3 hours. Vivid memories...
Coke or Pepsi? Sparkling Water/Club Soda/LaCroix - Gave up pop many years ago. But it was Pepsi growing up and Diet Coke in my adult years before I quit.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? "Just one more" as in one more pose, one more shot, one more look... to the client.
What has been your proudest moment? Completing a 5-year dream of leaving my full-time career and building a premier studio, purchasing and restoring a 100-year old commercial building for our studio and eventually selling our house to build a residence inside the studio building and getting my PPA Masters Degree and regional Senior Portrait awards all in the process. Now I'm just not sure what I want to do next. Rest maybe.
Most embarrassing moment: Very early in my photography career and as my previous career was winding down due to the economy and the future was uncertain, my co-worker and I found a new habit of leaving early on Fridays and heading to happy hour at the local sports bar/restaurant... After about four hours of sitting at the bar drinking, I got up to use the restroom. As I stumbled out back toward my barstool, I heard some kids excitedly yell "Hey Nate!" It was a family I had photographed a couple weeks before. I slurred a small conversation with them and probably left a very poor impression.
The good news is that was the beginning of the end for me with drinking. I decided if I were to make it in a small community with my name on the side of my building, I could no longer allow myself to be compromised like that. About a year later, I walked away from drinking all together. Life started getting better immediately... (not preaching... just sharing my experience.)
If you could have a theme song, what would it be? Most days I'm "You Got A Friend In Me" from Toy Story
What would be your advice for photographers just starting their career? Join the ranks of the professionals... Join their associations, such as PPA or local affiliates. Get to know handful of people whose imagery and business you admire. Learn from them. Listen to them. Implement what they teach you. And you can become the ones the next group of new photographers look up to and then give back to them. #mentorsrule

Speaker Sessions
Saturday, January 13, 2018

What do you most value in your friends? Deodorant.
What did you want to be as a kid when you grew up? I wanted to write movie screenplays. I actually have written some things I've never shown to anyone.
What is your most treasured possession? My first Hasselblad camera, 500C. I got it in 1979 and it had over 150,000 exposures when I got it. I worked it hard every day and put on another 350,000 exposures on it. It now sits on the mantel proudly having bought a house or two and a few cars.
What was your first concert? WAR, in 1973 (Cisco Kid, Low Rider, etc...)
What has been your proudest moment? I was really proud when I realized that I was either thanked or had work published in the books of 27 other photographers. Means more to me than anything I ever published under my name.
If you could have a theme song, what would it be? Beatles/John Lennon's "In My Life" (I'm a sucker for romance...)
