How did you learn to tie your shoes?

If you're like most of us, someone "shared their knowledge," explaining the need to create a tight knot to keep your sneakers from flying off when you run down the street. And if you were like me, then that person conducted more than one intensive "hands-on" training session. You'll be happy to know that I can tie my shoes now and have passed this knowledge on to the next generation...but I couldn't have done it without learning from someone else.

That example--simple though it may be--is the essence of what speakers do. Speakers have knowledge about a particular topic that they believe is important enough to share with those who are willing to learn. Do you have something to share? Speaking can open up new doors for you, from increasing your reputation with clients to potential honorariums for presentations.

I don't know a single photographer who began his or her speaking career in front of a thousand people at an international venue...but I know a lot of them who are well on their way, and they're sharing how they did it with you this week.

Join PPA-approved jury chairmen Dennis Craft and Dave Huntsman, June 14-17, 2009 in Atlanta, as they demystify the world of image judging. • Increase your skill and confidence in your craft. Preparing entries for the International Print Competition forces you to look deeper at your own photography.
• Earn merits towards a PPA Masters Degree. Accepted prints earn merits you need to obtain a PPA degree--a recognition of your level of commitment to and skill in photography.

What's New in 2009?

1. The registration deadline is May 1 (5 pm CST). As the judging will take place June 14-17, the entry deadline is earlier this year. Late cases will be accepted (at a higher entry fee) until 5pm CST on May 22.
2. After you submit your payment, you won't be able to make changes to your entry. Please review your information carefully before submitting that payment!
3. You must upload your images when you enter if you want them to be considered for publication.
4. You must upload your images when you enter if you are ordering a critique.

If you are close to earning your PPA Master or Craftsman degree, then watch your mailbox this Fall. PPA will begin mailing degree applications to potential degree recipients in mid-August. In order to receive your degree at Imaging USA in Nashville next January, you must have all required merits posted to your PPA record by October 30, 2009.

You can now earn merits for paid Webinars (1 merit for each Webinar credit), based on the following criteria:

*Attendees (service merits):

• Paid Webinar of less than a 3-hour duration - ½ Credit
  (For example, if you register for 2 paid Webinars that are less than 3 hours, you will earn 2 half credits, which equal 1 merit.)
• Paid Webinar of 3 hours or more - 1 Credit

**Presenters (speaking merits):

• Webinar of less than 3 hours - 1 Merit
• Webinar that is 3 hours or more - 2 Merits

Merits will be awarded for those eligible Webinars from January 12, 2009 on.

*Service merits are awarded only for first-time attendance to each Webinar (either live or archived). Multiple views of the same Webinar will not result in multiple merits.
**Speaking merits are awarded only for live or first-time presentation of each Webinar.

Share Your Knowledge, Earn Merits
Volunteer to share your knowledge at one of PPA's most successful educational initiatives. Proceeds from Super Monday support PPA's education programs, and instructors earn two speaking merits toward a PPA degree. Submit your form by May 8 for inclusion in the October 26, 2009 program. What is Super Monday?
Super Monday is PPA's peer-led education program. Each spring and fall, professional photographers volunteer to instruct their fellow photographers. Topics include: posing & lighting, workflow, Photoshop, weddings, senior portraits, business, marketing, and more. Proceeds from the program support PPA's non-profit education, copyright, and advocacy initiatives.
