Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the key behind getting your website to rank highly in Google and other search engines, hopefully helping more people to find your photography business' site that you can convert to clients!

It's an ongoing process that involves many factors, some of which include seeding keywords into your website, building links from other sources back to your site, and some technical aspects to make sure that search engines are spotting your website.

There are companies that will promise quickly getting your page to the top of Google for a cheap fee, but be wary that these may only be short term results that won't hold up in the long term. SEO takes constant effort, but instead of thinking of it as a cost to your business, think of it as an investment to the overall health of your web marketing plan.

So, you know that SEO is important, but you're feeling a little daunted by starting the process. Where to begin?

Luckily, PPA is hosting "The Pitfalls of SEO" webinar on July 16 to help you along the path. To give you a comprehensive view of the SEO process and the details to be on the lookout for, PPAedu has brought in Brett Snyder, Director of SEO at Nebo Agency. Brett's a true SEO guru, so the webinar will be packed with great advice for photographers just starting out with it for their business, as well as some issues you may have never considered for those of you that have already started doing it!

During the class, Brett will cover how search engines find and rank pages and how you can develop a strategy that will help your website get those high-rankings. He'll discuss things like organic search, evaluating the keywords you want to rank for, on-page SEO factors (such as meta info and internal linking), and off-page SEO factors like link building and gaining authority for your site. If that all sounded like gibberish to you, don't worry, Brett's going to make it all very easy to understand.

In addition, he'll also talk about some of technical factors to be aware of (again, he'll make these easy to understand). After all, if Google can't find your site, it won't be ranked.

Finally, Brett will cover some of the penalties you can incur by trying to go the cheap and easy route that we talked about earlier.

As Brett says, "Google is smarter than you...if you try and cheat the system you will pay for it."

The explosion in competition due to the transition to digital photography has left many wedding photographers frustrated and fearful that they will not be able to succeed in such a crowded market place.

So how can you overcome the challenges of increased competition in the wedding photography market? Believe it or not, simply changing your attitude as to how you shoot and sell weddings can make a huge difference!

We know that having great work isn't enough anymore. Sales and marketing techniques are becoming so important that even less talented photographers are able to break through and get a piece of the professional photography pie. Not always fair, some of you will think.

The 'no risks - no rewards' approach seems to be a new motto these days, but it's easier said than done. conner_ziser_jane_head2012blog.jpgWho doesn't want to look their best in a photograph? It's a nearly universal desire--I challenge you to find someone who doesn't! It stands to reason, then, that if you can help your subjects look better than ever in their portraits, you'll likely wind up with better sales and much happier clients. And retouching skin is a very, very important step in that direction.

"No matter what else you might do to someone during the retouching process, the skin is what will make it believable or false," says Jane Conner-Ziser, Cr.Photog., API, one of the world's top retouching artists. That's why she's preparing a PPA webinar to share these skills: "Tips for Retouching Skin in Photoshop" (Aug. 28, 2:00pm Eastern).

Though it's not hard to retouch skin, it requires a variety of retouching tools for different purposes. After all, no two faces are alike. "We used to joke about wanting some kind of solution we could dip our negatives into that would know where to retouch and where not to," Jane laughs. "Today, we have auto-retouching software or brush-on retouching actions that STILL don't know what to remove, what to soften or shorten, and what to leave alone."

For example, Jane says that you need to be able to analyze the expression of each subject and bring out their best during the retouching process. "Some angles of light or character affect the way we see people. Is a person smiling in their eyes, but projecting anxiety in the face?" She'll show you how to handle this during the webinar, too.

In other words, it's up to you, my friend. Sure, there are great tools to use (and Jane will show you some), but you need control over the lighting, expression and visual appearance of your work from start to finish. Nothing replaces a master's touch!
