Be More Creative: A Guide to the 2016 District Photographic Competitions

By Sarah Ackerman

Photographers that enter the International Photographic Competitions (IPC) have said time and time again that they are the single best way to push your craft, creativity and technique. During judging, IPC Jurors review your images against the 12 Elements of a Merit Image and if you'd like, we will even record a critique of your image. You can check out a handful of past critiques here! The Juror will explain the best parts of your image to show you where you're on the right track, as well as areas that could be improved to show you where you can grow in the coming years.

"Once photographers get over the initial fear of competition, most keep entering year after year and become better photographers in the process," said Randy McNeilly, PPA's Photographic Exhibition Committee chairman. "Even if a participant doesn't earn a merit right away, there's so much that can be learnt. Plus, it's a huge confidence booster, not only for the photographer, but also for the client who commissioned their work--especially once the photographer starts winning awards."

If the International Photographic Competition is a little too grand for your taste, District Photographic Competitions are a great place to start. The dates and the rules for the District Photographic Competitions are already up!

Dates open early in 2016, so keep competitions in mind as you work through your holiday sessions and end of year clients. Go ahead, challenge yourself and Be More Creative
