Dear PPA Member,

Growing up, what was your favorite thing about school? Maybe it was the field trips you got to take (I could give you a tour of the Boston Museum of Science--I swear my school took us there every year!) or learning about your favorite subject (foreign languages always fascinated me).

I loved school, but I must admit that I also loved that stretch of time called "summer break" when I didn't have to go to school. No homework, no waking up early, and time to do whatever I wanted. (Or what my parents wanted, which was to send me to summer camp...which I think was their "summer break.")

Eventually, we all grow up and move from school towards our careers. While most careers don't usually feature 3-month summer breaks, some of you may encounter times of the year when business slows down. This week's Vital Signs is about that time of the year and how you can make the most of it. Just because you don't have clients booked every day doesn't mean you have to sit around and do nothing. You can still be productive and, I promise, no camp songs or mosquitoes will be involved.

Cheers!

Tamron has announced the first in its series of four photo contests for 2010: Dusk till Dawn asks entrants to submit sunrise, sunset and nighttime images by March 31, 2010. The Grand Prize Winner of Contest One 2010 will receive his/her choice of one of these Tamron lenses: SP AF60mm F2 Di-II 1:1 Macro; SP AF10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di-II; SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di-II VC; or AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC. Users of any camera equipment may enter the Tamron photo contest.

"We have made several great changes in our contest promotion for 2010," stated Stacie Errera, Tamron's Chief Marketing Officer. "Rather than holding one annual contest with just one chance to win, we expanded the contest program to include a series of contests that allow many more people to enter as the themes will vary across the series." Tamron also opened up the contest to photographers not exclusively using Tamron lenses. "With so many new enthusiastic novices entering this hobby, we want to give everyone the opportunity to acquire one of our lenses through our contest promotions. And by allowing the winner the choice of lens prize," continued Errera, "the contest series becomes more valuable to many more people who have different needs than just one lens type."

The "Dusk till Dawn" photo contest entries will be evaluated and selected by a guest judge, Ken Hubbard, who specializes in landscape and travel photography. Hubbard, Field Services Manager for Tamron, is a pro photographer who has had nationwide gallery showings of his landscape photography. He regularly teaches enthusiasts how to take better photos at dynamic seminars around the country. You can see his work at Ken Hubbard Photography.

In addition to receiving the Tamron lens of choice, the winner's picture will be showcased on the Tamron website. The winner and twenty photographers whose images are selected by our judge as Favorites will have their names and winning images published on the website and on the Tamron Page on Facebookâ„¢ for all to admire.

Dear PPA Member,

As a professional photographer, your job allows you to meet and interact with people every time you book a job--especially if they are the subject of the images! Pursuing that interaction and forming a relationship is a large part of your success. It gives people a reason to come back to you the next time they need pictures, instead of the photographer down the street. Think about it this way: it would be pretty difficult for you to do your job if you didn't interact with other people (well, maybe unless you are a landscape photographer).

This week's New Year's resolution is to be more active in the photography sphere. Just as you need to interact with your clients, you also need to interact with fellow photographers. Such activity gives you the opportunity to make connections and share ideas. This is where PPA Affiliates come into play. Maybe you've heard of them and maybe you haven't, but becoming a member of a PPA Affiliate is the perfect place to start forming successful business relationships with other photographers in your area.

Now, get out there and get active!

Cheers!

Something exciting is coming your way soon...something that could change the "face" of online dating and help YOU create more relationships, too.

As PPA members, you'll have an exclusive chance to join Accuphoto, starting January 10, 2010. Created by Brenda Kirkland, a PPA member herself, Accuphoto is a unique service that provides certified professional images to members of the online dating community at a fixed price.

How Accuphoto Can Help You
First of all, this is a FREE marketing tool for photographers--that's helpful right there!

PPA has announced a new partnership with Accuphoto that will be a strong benefit for PPA members.

Accuphoto was started by PPA member Brenda Kirkland after she had a bad experience with someone misrepresenting their identity on an online dating site. Her idea was to create a a specialized service that provides professionally done images for dating sites that could be certified as genuine.

The marketing concept is simple. Accuphoto will promote its services through advertising relationships with major Internet dating sites. Dating site prospects will visit the Accuphoto site where they will be linked with a PPA member who is enrolled in the Accuphoto program. (Program enrollment is free and exclusive to PPA members.) PPA members agree to schedule a mini photo session and provide a certified photograph for $65.

Dear PPA Member,

This is the first Vital Signs of 2010...and what better way to ring in the new year than to talk about new ways to communicate with your clients? In a recent Vital Signs, I referenced my father's love of texting. In addition to texting, my father's social media resume also includes a Facebook page and a Twitter account. I make this point to show the incredible reach you can achieve by expanding the way you communicate.

In case you've missed the past month or two of Vital Signs, online communications and social media have exploded as ways for companies to interact with their clients. It's becoming more and more common for the general population to utilize these resources (see above paragraph for reference). By taking advantage of these tools, you not only communicate more effectively and reach more people, but you also save money in the process--how can you turn that down? Read this week's Vital Signs here.

Cheers!

Lexar has increased the capacity of Professional 300x CF cards to 32GB, and Professional 233x CF cards are now available in 16GB and 32GB capacities. In addition, the Lexar Professional 133x SDHC card has achieved a Class 10 speed rating. The improvements to the Lexar® Professional line allow professional photographers and advanced enthusiasts to capture more high-resolution images and high-definition (HD) video with their digital SLRs. For additional information about the Lexar Professional CF and SDHC cards, visit www.lexar.com.

The Lexar Professional 133x SDHC memory card now offers the maximum Class 10 speed rating, providing a blazing-fast minimum sustained write speed capability of 133x (20MB per second) for shooting higher-resolution images and large-sized, high-definition video files with SDHC-enabled devices. Additionally, the Lexar Professional 133x SDHC card significantly improves camera performance and image transfer speeds from card to computer, reducing post-production time and enabling shooters to focus on the business of photography.

"Professional photographers can't afford to miss important shots because their memory cards can't keep up," said Manisha Sharma, director of memory card product marketing, Lexar Media. "Lexar's high-capacity, high-performance memory cards enable shooters to reliably capture more images without having to change cards and potentially miss a shot. The enhancements we've made to these cards further demonstrate our dedication to satisfying consumer demand with the equipment photographers want and need to maximize their digital imaging experience."

Lexar Professional CF memory cards in all capacities offer impressive speed and performance, with a guaranteed minimum sustained write speed capability of 233x (35MB per second) and 300x (45MB per second) for enhanced capture capabilities. When paired with a UDMA-enabled device, such as the Lexar Professional UDMA FireWire® 800 Reader or the Lexar Professional UDMA Dual-Slot USB Reader, Lexar Professional CF and SDHC cards significantly improve the digital imaging workflow by accelerating the download of captured images to a destination computer.

"Lexar Professional memory cards help me capture the best images possible and these higher capacities will allow me to shoot longer without changing cards, which is vital when working in a nautical environment," said Lexar Elite Photographer, Onne van der Wal, who is renowned for his nautical and sailing photography. "It's essential that I have the most dependable and advanced equipment available and that's why I trust Lexar to protect my work. Lexar has always understood the details of a professional's workflow process and I look forward to integrating the new high-capacity, higher-speed Professional cards into my routine."

Eye-Fi Inc. has developed the next generation Eye-Fi experience, which includes an entirely new platform and more flexible sharing options. Unveiled January 5th, the 8GB Eye-Fi Pro X2 is powered by Eye-Fi's proprietary X2 engine and is the company's revolutionary step in achieving high-end memory card performance. Photo enthusiasts will benefit from increased storage capacity, Class 6 performance for faster read/write speeds, faster-than-ever wireless photo and video uploads and increased Wi-Fi range.

Eye-Fi Pro X2 users will also benefit from a new feature, Endless Memory mode, which enables the Eye-Fi card to automatically make space available after photos and videos are uploaded. Last, Eye-Fi is introducing Eye-Fi Center, a new desktop application that gives users more options in sharing their digital memories.

"With the introduction of our first wireless memory card, we made backing up and sharing photos effortless.  Now, we're again redefining what is possible with a leap forward in technology, performance and user experience," said Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi. "The new X2 engine delivers further on the promise of a connected device more convenience and virtually endless storage capacity, so there is no cap on the memories that can be captured."

Eye-Fi Pro X2 Faster than Ever
The 8GB SDHC Eye-Fi Pro X2 is powered by Eye-Fi's proprietary X2 engine which includes an exclusively designed chip and an 802.11n radio. The X2 engine enables greater flexibility in memory capacity and faster read write/speeds, achieving Class 6 performance. The 802.11n radio and a new antenna design enable faster wireless uploads and increased Wi-Fi range, and still support the 802.11b and 802.11g standards. The Eye-Fi Pro X2 wirelessly uploads JPEG and RAW images and videos from the camera to computer and one of 25 online photo and video sharing sites, such as Flickr, Picasa or Facebook. It also allows users to create an ad hoc connection directly to their computer to wirelessly upload photos and videos while away from a wireless router. Or users can upload away from home at more than 10,000 Wayport and open hotspots. Pro X2 automatically geotags photos with information about where the images were taken.

It is available for pre-order on www.eye.fi and at select online retailers such as Amazon.com for an MSRP of $149.99.

"More and more we're seeing smart devices like the Eye-Fi card that enable a better user experience. With the volume of photos and videos that are taken every day, consumers want a fast, convenient way to get their images off their camera to their computer and the Web for further processing and sharing," said Alan Bullock of InfoTrends. "Eye-Fi allows consumers to add these capabilities for far less than the cost of a wireless camera."

Endless Memory No Cap to the Number of Memories that Can be Captured - In Endless Memory mode users can choose to have Eye-Fi automatically make space available on their Eye-Fi Pro X2. Using the card's ability to communicate with the Eye-Fi Service, it receives confirmation whenever photos and videos are safely delivered to the user's computer and/or online sharing site. When the card reaches the user's pre-determined amount of space used, it will remove files that have been safely uploaded, beginning with the oldest even when the card is not connected to a network.  If files have not yet been uploaded, the Pro X2 will not remove them. This option can be set up in Eye-Fi Center.

Eye-Fi Center Easier Storing and Sharing on Multiple Sharing Sites - Eye-Fi also introduced Eye-Fi Center, a new desktop application for managing the Eye-Fi card and experience. Eye-Fi Center has a redesigned interface that is easy to use, with drag and drop capabilities. Eye-Fi Center allows users to select and republish photos and videos to different online locations, so users can share on multiple sites. It also allows users to get any photos or videos on their computer (even those not uploaded with an Eye-Fi card) into the Eye-Fi system, where they can be easily published online. And it allows users to access some features, even when not connected to the Internet, such as adding a wireless network to their card.

Eye-Fi Center will be available for download later this month.
