PPA Today: December 2009 Archives

December 2009 Archives

Dear PPA Member,

Pop quiz: What did you do the second week of February this year?

Are you having trouble remembering? Don't worry...I had the same problem, too. With our lives as busy as they are, it's no wonder we forget things. Trying to remember work appointments, the grocery list, and your neighbor's birthday can wreak havoc on your memory.

To help ease the burden, we decided to do a recap of all the new benefits that PPA has added over the past year. We're constantly trying to add value to your membership, and in 2009 we added everything from new business discounts to expanded educational resources. If you've used some of these new benefits, great! If not, take a moment to look them over. It's never too late to start using a benefit!

Happy Holidays!

Are you ready for a photographic adventure? Roger Nelson of Global Travel Photography is offering 3 photo tours in 2010 geared to active photographers who want an opportunity to photograph an area of the world they may never have been to before.

The first tour is to Namibia in Africa, and it begins on April 25. The second tour to Peru begins on May 30. The last 2010 tour is to Turkey, and it is scheduled for September 22. Your photo ops will include landscapes, people, wildlife, and architecture--something for everyone!

Now, photographers with any level of photography experience are accepted, and the tour guides will provide as much or as little help as the participants want. Dear PPA Member,

It's already the end of December, and the holidays are here (if you haven't noticed). If you're anything like us, you are wondering where the year went! It feels like we were just in Phoenix for Imaging USA 2009...but in a few short weeks, we will be in Nashville for Imaging USA 2010.

Even though we associate this time of year with Imaging USA preparation, we like to remember that it is also the holiday season. It's a time for friends and families to gather together. To continue that holiday spirit, we have gathered together a list of Vital Signs articles that we feel represents the best of the year. Take a look at the topics and see what articles spark your interest. It never hurts to refresh business advice and ideas, and they can be a great read on your trip to Nashville!

Happy Holidays!

As the health care debate unfolds in the Senate, Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and its allied organizations are watching. In a letter sent to the Senate, PPA joined the Small Business Coalition for Affordable Health Care to ask for H.R. 3590 -The Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act to be made friendlier to the small business community.

The message being sent is that the combination of provisions included in the bill are not likely to provide small businesses with the long-term relief needed to ensure continuous access to quality and affordable health care.

Your Copyright & Government Affairs staff wanted to keep you updated on some of the provisions in this legislation, so that you can make informed decisions and ensure your voice is heard.

Nik Software announces today that it is shipping its award-winning Viveza 2, the latest upgrade to its award-winning and revolutionary photo editing software for selective color and light control. Viveza 2 now offers users robust global adjustments and precise selective controls that utilize Nik Software's award-winning U Point® technology. Viveza 2 eliminates the need to create complicated selections or layer masks and provides a powerful solution for users looking to save time and effort when editing images.

"The first release of Viveza was truly revolutionary and introduced the most effective way to selectively edit photos," said Michael J. Slater, president and CEO of Nik Software. "With Viveza 2, we listened to a wide range of photographers and added even more control and a new level of precision to make Viveza 2 not only more powerful, but also an essential tool for anyone who regularly edits photos."
If you photograph students or for schools, you don't want to miss the new printer under the KG ProPhoto brand: the Smart ID Card Printer.  This Smart ID Card printer will be demonstrated at the Kanematsu USA Inc. / KG ProPhoto booth (1025) at the Imaging USA convention at the Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville from January 10 through the 12.

The Smart ID Card Printer is fast, convenient, portable and easy-to-use.  Many school photographers report that offering ID cards as part of a package deal is an effective way for them to get photo services contracts for schools.

Tragic events of the past changed the landscape of school safety forever.  However, a recent research report from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) indicates that almost 50 percent of school respondents said they still were not using staff or student badges.   AASA recommends for maximum security all staff and students should be included in an integrated PC-based access control system that includes badging.*

Nearly 80 percent of administrators responding to the survey describe their funding level as "stretched" or "inadequate".* Therefore, requiring many schools to choose between safety and textbooks.  The Smart ID Card Printer has a minimal equipment investment.  Cards can be printed for as little as $0.34 per card.

"Offering the Smart ID Card Printer is one way KG ProPhoto plans to further expand its product line to cover an even greater range of printers that provide cost-effective, high-quality performance that ultimately enhances the profit potential for photographers, retailers and other end users," notes Andrew Peterson, KG ProPhoto National Sales Manager.

Adobe today announced the immediate availability of Lightroom 2.6, Photoshop Camera Raw 5.6 and DNG Converter 5.6 on Adobe.com. Originally posted as release candidates for community testing on Adobe Labs, these final versions include raw file support for 20 new popular camera models, including the Canon EOS 7D and Nikon D3s. Additional DNG support has been added for the Leica M9 and Ricoh GXR camera models. A full list of the newly supported cameras is below.

The updates also provide a fix for an issue affecting PowerPC customers using the final Lightroom 2.5 and Camera Raw 5.5 updates on the Mac. The issue, introduced in the demosaic change to address sensors with unequal green response, has the potential to create artifacts in the highlight area while using the Highlight Recovery tool in raw files from Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and various medium format digital camera backs.

Adobe would like to thank everyone who downloaded and provided feedback on the Lightroom 2.6 and Camera Raw 5.6 Release Candidates. Lightroom 2 software is today's digital photography workflow solution, allowing photographers to quickly import, process, manage and showcase images, and the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in provides fast and easy access within Photoshop to the raw image formats produced by many leading digital cameras. Adobe's Digital Negative (DNG) format is a publicly available archival format for the raw files generated by digital cameras.

Lightroom 2.6 is available as a free download for existing Lightroom 2 customers, and Photoshop Camera Raw 5.6 is available as a free download for existing customers of Photoshop CS4, Photoshop Elements 8 (Win/Mac) and Premiere Elements 8. DNG Converter 5.6 is also available as a free download for all customers. Click here for more information and to download the updates: www.adobe.com/downloads/updates.

Dear {name},

In case you haven't noticed--or have been trying to avoid it--we live in a world that is growing more digital by the day. Tweets, texts, and posts have found their way into our everyday routines. And it is not only our personal lives that are affected, but our businesses as well. It's not unusual for me to follow up a text to my dad (yes, my 76-year-old father is an avid texter) with a post on the Imaging USA Facebook page.

The important thing to remember--and the subject of this Vital Signs--is to keep your business communications professional. Your studio's blog or social networking site represents your business, regardless of how casual the medium may seem. Don't let your blog turn into a diary or your Tweets develop into only a summary of your day-to-day activities. Saying the right thing is essential in keeping your readers coming back for more!

Cheers,
Christel Aprigliano

Each year, global optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss holds an annual worldwide photo contest. This year's competition, which opens on December 15 and accepts entries until January 15, 2010, has the theme "digital culture". Photographers and photo enthusiasts are invited to explore and capture this broad theme from their own unique perspective. Anyone can participate, provided the pictures are shot with a Carl Zeiss lens. Pictures can be taken with any type of camera, from an SLR reflex camera to the camera of a mobile phone.

Technology is shaping ever more areas of our lives and has become an indelible part of our culture. Computers, internet and mobile devices are part and parcel of daily life and have made many things easier. They have also changed the way people interact with each other, exchange information, work, play, meet friends, enjoy music, and much more. Carl Zeiss invites photographers from around the globe to capture this contemporary yet challenging theme in exciting images.

An international jury consisting of photographers Edith Held and Jürgen Müller among others will assess the images on their creativity and technical execution. Highest points will be given to photographers whose images have been created before and during the shutter release, with as little revising and adapting of the image as possible.

The jury will select 10 winners after January 15. They will receive various types of merchandise.

First prize is a ZEISS SLR-lens, which the winner can select. The second prize is a set of Cinemizer Plus video glasses, including an iPod touch 8 GB. Third prize is a Nokia N 86 mobile telephone.

The Carl Zeiss photo contest takes place each year in December. Last year's theme was "pulse of the city". The jury was led by Uwe Ommer.

For more information or to sign up for the contest, visit www.zeiss.com/photo

Photodex Corporation has released ProShow 4.1, the latest version of its award-winning photo and video slide show software for Windows. ProShow 4.1 makes it easy for users to get their slide shows online and in front of friends, family or clients with new integrated uploading to Facebook, Vimeo and Twitter. Version 4.1 also features an all-new Slide Style Manager and dozens of new, user requested features that help make ProShow better than ever.

"We know what a huge part social networking sites play in our customer's lives. It's a place for them to communicate with friends, family and even reach out to potential clients. That's why we integrated uploading to these sites directly into ProShow 4.1 and made it a very simple and quick process", said Paul Schmidt, President and Founder of Photodex Corporation.

Users accessing large libraries of Slide Styles will experience greatly improved speed when loading the Slide Styles dialog and previewing complex styles. In 2010, PPA will be developing several new marketing tools that focus on selling the unique value of professional photography and we're looking for a few PPA members who would be willing to be interviewed on camera while they are at Imaging USA.  Can you spend a ½ hour participating in this project?  If so, please contact Therese Aleman for more information.

Dear PPA Member,

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that your clients fill up your email inbox a lot quicker than your mailbox. Am I right? It seems as though written letters and stamps have been replaced with electronic signatures and a send button - not to mention the occasional LOL and :). Who can you blame though? We live in a world (and work in an industry) where technology plays a major role.

Take this Vital Signs for example. How was it sent to you? E-mail. And what about the PPA Today newsletter? Yep, e-mail again. In fact, much of what PPA sends you goes directly to your inbox. It's quick, it's easy, and it's how we have learned to communicate.

The point of this Vital Signs is to stress the importance of keeping your emails professional. Whether you are emailing a client about an appointment or a vendor about an order, remember that it is still a business transaction. To steal a line from Spiderman, with great power comes great responsibility. Take advantage of the power of e-mail, but make sure you read it over before you press send!

Cheers,
Christel Aprigliano
Director of Member Value & Experience

Nikon Inc. today announced two new NIKKOR optics that deliver the pinnacle of image quality for professional photographers who demand super telephoto capabilities. The new, fast aperture AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II super telephoto lens and AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III deliver images with stunning edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity throughout the frame. Continued refinements and new technologies such as Vibration Reduction (VR) II and optimized autofocus (AF) modes in the lens enhance functionality and improve performance for discerning FX and DX-format digital SLR photographers.

"The latest edition of the NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8 lens advances one of the most popular fast-aperture focal lengths for sports, nature and wildlife photography, demonstrating Nikon's commitment to professional photographers through the continued development of the optical fidelity and sharpness for which NIKKOR lenses are famous," said Edward Fasano, general manager for marketing, SLR Systems Products at Nikon Inc. "Offering compatibility with a wide range of NIKKOR optics, including the new 300mm f/2.8, the TC-20E III teleconverter enables photographers to greatly extend the versatility of a variety of zoom and telephoto lenses they carry."

Whether photographing nature in the wild or the battles at a line of scrimmage, the 300mm f/2.8 is an essential tool for photographers who require the highest level of image quality for publication and printing. This 300mm lens effectively leverages a host of Nikon core technologies, including Nikon VR II image stabilization, specifically engineered for each lens design for maximum performance. VR II instills confidence by counteracting image blur introduced by camera shake and telephoto magnification, allowing users to shoot up to four shutter speed stops* slower than otherwise possible, overcoming many of the challenges of handheld shooting. If tripod shooting is preferred, the Tripod Detection Mode will detect and compensate for tripod-specific vibrations.

This professional lens is constructed of die-cast magnesium for maximum durability and is strategically sealed to resist dust and moisture, with protective Meniscus glass to safeguard the lens' front element. The optical formula features three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for superior sharpness, color and image quality, while minimizing chromatic aberration. Additionally, an aspherical element is used to promote image integrity throughout the frame, suppress coma and minimize distortion. The lens also features Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology which enables high-speed autofocus performance with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation. Nikon's exclusive Nano Crystal Coat prevents instances of ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.

The AF-S 300mm f/2.8 lens features a host of professional focusing features that further enhance functionality. Photographers can now select from three focus modes to match shooting conditions, including manual mode (M) and autofocus with manual priority (M/A) mode, and the new A/M mode. The A/M mode enhances AF control with fast, secure switching from automatic and manual focus to adapt to personal shooting preference and techniques. Additionally, users can also activate the AF Recall Mode at the press of a button that allows for instant return to a predetermined point of focus to capture anticipated shots confidently.

Nikon's professional grade teleconverters, including the new AF-S TC-20E III are ideal companions to the new NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8 and other select lenses to create an affordable and portable gateway to extended telephoto photography. The new TC-20E III effectively doubles the focal length of select lenses, and is the world's first teleconverter to feature an aspherical element to virtually eliminate coma and other aberrations even at wide apertures.

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens is scheduled to be available at Nikon authorized dealers with an estimated selling price of $5,899.95.  The Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III will be available for estimated selling price of $499.95.  Availability of both products is scheduled to begin in January, 2010. In advance of an exhibition of wedding dresses in 2013, the Victoria & Albert Museum in the UK is creating a database of photographs of clothes worn for weddings from all cultures between 1840 and the present. This database will provide a rich record and help people date their own photographs.

To ensure that an useful historical record is built, all entries will provide the year of the event and the names of the bride and groom or partners. The place and the religion of the wedding should be included if possible. The museum would like photographers to upload up to three photographs showing the fashions at any one wedding and the principal image should focus on the detail of the wedding dress (or partners' clothes).

Today Eye-Fi Inc. announced a collaboration with Google's Picasa that makes sharing and storing memories effortless, just in time for the holidays.  Anyone who purchases 200GB or more of extra Google storage will receive a free Eye-Fi wireless memory card, which lets users send photos and videos directly from their camera to the Web.

Users can enjoy automatic backup of their memories with Google and Eye-Fi, and store up to 100,000 5MB photos under the 200GB plan.  The combined power of Google's Picasa Web Albums and Eye-Fi's automatic geotagging service also lets users easily view their photos plotted on a map where the image was taken, and search or organize photos by location.

"Google and Eye-Fi have the common vision of leveraging the power of the cloud to provide effortless ways for consumers to store and share their memories," said Jef Holove, CEO for Eye-Fi. "Together we're giving consumers the most convenient way to get their memories off the camera, and onto the Web.  We're enabling users to focus on the memories, and not the chore of offloading images from a camera and storing them."

Google's storage solutions featuring the Eye-Fi card start at 200GB per year for $50 and are available for customers in the United States and Canada from www.picasa.google.com/eyefi.html. With this promotion, the free Eye-Fi Home video card (a $69.99 value) also comes with one free year of Web Share and Geotagging services (an additional $24.98 value), which can be extended with continued use of Google's Web properties.

This marks the latest development in Google and Eye-Fi's ongoing collaboration.  Picasa Web Albums was one of the first photo sharing sites to integrate with Eye-Fi, and YouTube became the first online sharing site where Eye-Fi users could automatically upload videos.  To date, Eye-Fi users have uploaded more than 2.7 million photos to Picasa.

"By giving people a better way to upload and share their photos, Picasa Web Albums and Eye-Fi help people share life's memories easily with the added peace of mind that their information is backed up in the cloud," said Google Product Management Director Brian Axe.
Leaf Imaging announced today the immediate availability of Leaf Capture Remote - an application that extends Leaf Capture 11 workflow software, enabling remote image viewing on an Apple iPhone(TM), or iPod(R) Touch. The Leaf Capture Remote application allows photographers and digital operators using Leaf digital backs and camera systems to view, zoom and pan high resolution Leaf RAW images on an Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. It is the first application to permit real-time, on-set remote viewing of medium format images, enabling instant feedback on any shot.

Now, while a photographer is shooting tethered using Leaf Capture software, a client or creative director can view the images over a standard Wi-Fi network on an Apple mobile device.

"Leaf Capture Remote lets me quickly check my files when I can't see my laptop on location," says Dutch-based professional photographer Frank Doorhof of Studio FD, "or I can just give my visitors an iPhone to browse and check it themselves without interrupting our workflow. Simply put -- it rocks."

Leaf Capture Remote application version 1.0 is free and available now for download from Apple's iPhone App Store. It supports all Leaf products that connect to Leaf Capture. (To find it, search for "Leaf Capture" in the Apple iTunes App Store.)

Additional information on installation and setup is available at : http://www.leaf-photography.com/products_lcremote.asp

Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce its newly upgraded 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM lens.

This large aperture, standard zoom lens contains state-of-the-art enhancements, including the company's own Optical Stabilization (OS), anti-shake technology that offers the use of shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Once again, only Sigma has made it possible for Pentax and Sony shooters to utilize an anti-shake system in either the lens or the camera body.

This lens' predecessor, the 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro HSM, was deemed a "Best Buy" recommendation for photographers wishing to purchase a standard zoom lens as part of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art's (CAPA) "Best Lens of the Year" awards.

"Aside from the OS technology, which is key when shooting with mid-range and high-end class DSLRs, this lens stands apart from the crowd because of its impressive zoom range," said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, general manager of Sigma Corporation of America. "It has a 4x zoom range that is equivalent to 24-105mm lenses in full-frame formats. That, coupled with the OS technology and a macro function, makes it the ultimate standard lens for serious photographers who want top-notch image quality and functionality at an affordable price."

With a large aperture of F2.8 on the wide end and F4 at the tele end, as well as a macro function with a minimum focusing distance of 8.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, this lens is ideal for a wide range of photography. The lens' Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) also ensures a quiet and high speed auto focus, while its rounded, seven-blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas to provide the optimal Bokeh effect. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.

Three aspherical lenses and one Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations when shooting with this lens. Additionally, the Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting to produce high-contrast images.

The 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM lens is currently available in Sigma, Canon, Nikon (D), Sony (D) and Pentax mounts for $680 MSRP in stores nationwide.

Dear PPA Member,

The last thing you probably want to be thinking about right now is credit cards and debt. It's the holiday season, and you're busy with other things (like, oh...orders from clients, party invitations, and that perfect gift for Aunt Mabel). Still, before the end of the year, you should really take the time to order your credit report.

You can do this by going to www.annualcreditreport.com. (Use this site, and not others that claim to be "free," because they're not.) AnnualCreditReport.com is the official site to help consumers to obtain a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

This week's Vital Signs will help to decipher what's on your credit report and how it can affect your credit score. Understanding that can help you with your peace of mind for your business...but I regret to say, it won't help you with Aunt Mabel's gift.

Cheers,
Christel Aprigliano
Director of Member Value & Experience
