September 2009 Archives

TAP has introduced their new DPS Digital Proofing System. This dual purpose Digital Proofing System allows you to display photos and deliver a CD/DVD in one package.

The folios and easels in the system have a unique retractable CD/DVD storage sleeve hidden in the back panels. A thumb notch provides easy access to the CD/DVD. TAP recommends the DPS Digital Proofing System for delivering wedding and senior proofs or low resolution files while displaying actual photos in the product. It can also be used as an incentive to high end packages or as a marketing tool to show off your studio's work.

Is your credit card processing company charging you PCI Compliance fees?

PPA's isn't.

PPA's affiliated credit card processor, Midwest Transaction Group (MTG), will help you comply with the PCI Standard established by Visa, MasterCard and Discover...and it won't cost you anything but a little time.

About the PCI Standard
The credit card industry has been slowly initiating measures to safeguard credit card data. While a good step, it can cost business owners (like photographers) more money. The PCI Standard applies to anyone who accepts credit or debit card transactions, and it requires you to successfully complete and file an annual assessment of your ability to safeguard card data.

Most processors take a hands-off approach to the whole assessment process, sending you to a third-party provider who then sends you to a website for "assistance." This can typically cost anywhere from $119 to $199 a year and another $20 a month if you don't comply. But not so for PPA members!

Midwest Transaction Group's Helping Hand
MTG's licensed PCI compliance technology enables them to walk you through the whole process, helping you meet all of the related filing requirements. Most importantly, MTG is able to do so at no charge for you!

PCI compliance doesn't have to be difficult, especially if you are dealing with a processing company like MTG, one that is more interested in helping you become compliant than in collecting non-compliant fees.

To learn more about PPA's credit card processing service through Midwest Transaction Group (a PPA member benefit), call them directly at 888.599.2209.

Dear PPA Member,

Not many people I know raise their hand at the chance to learn more about taxes. Let's be real...taxes aren't "exciting." In most situations, they bring us more headaches than joy. However, if you avoid learning about particular types of taxes, you're just putting off the inevitable--and you may hurt your business in the long run. Successful photographers are not just talented artists; they're business-savvy.

This article in the Studio Management Services' Business Finance for Photographers series is a must-read for anyone who wants a clearer understanding of sales and employment tax. As business owners, staying on top of these types of taxes can prevent headaches (although I can't guarantee you'll be jumping for joy)!

The "Arnold Newman Prize" for new directions in portraiture will be available as a separate category entry in Photo District News' Photo Annual competition and will recognize an individual for their innovative approach to photographic portraiture. The prize is sponsored by the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation - which was created in honor of Arnold Newman, the "father of industrial photography" - with support from Maine Media Workshops, the American Society of Media Photographers, and Photo District News.

In addition, the Newman Foundation has established an endowment at Maine Media Workshops to provide financial assistance to students in the form of scholarships.

"The Arnold Newman Prize demonstrating excellence in photographic portraiture, and the endowment program established at Maine Media Workshops are wonderful ways to maintain our father's legacy and all his accomplishments as a photographer while providing an opportunity for other photographers to explore their creative vision," explains David Newman, Arnold's son and co-founder of the foundation with his brother Eric.

"By offering financial assistance from the Foundation and public exposure through the Maine Media Workshops and their partners, we are able to encourage and reward excellence in photography," says Eric Newman. "Our parents would be pleased with the opportunities their foundation presents to young and talented photographers," Newman added.

In some cases, upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard has caused Alien Skin products to lose their activation data.

Products like Blow Up 2, Bokeh and Snap Art 2 have experienced problems.

If you have encountered problems with this software while upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard,  Alien Skin has provided instructions for fixing these issues here.
Dallas photographer and PPA member Gail Nogle recently had some of her portrait work shown on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer.

Nogle's portrait of formerly conjoined twins Mohamed and Ahmed Ibrahim was shown during a story about the children.

Dear PPA Member,

I believe that when you give from the heart, you get back more than you expect. I hope you've experienced something similar from the last couple of Vital Signs articles about working and marketing with charities. As we've shared some new ways to give, hopefully it has sparked new marketing ideas for your business, too.

This week, we've gathered even more marketing (and giving) ideas. You'll be able to take at look at how some PPA members combine their marketing efforts with local charities for a good payoff--financially as well as emotionally. Whether you make your charity marketing efforts an everyday part of your business or just for certain occasions, I think you'll get back more than you expect.

Have you experienced that, too? After last week's Vital Signs article, I received an e-mail from a PPA member who gives from his heart with his photography, helping military families. I'd love to hear what you do within your own community. Drop me a line at caprigliano@ppa.com.

The 2009 AN-NE Marketing Awards results are in! Take a look at which photographers rose to the top in an extraordinarily tough competition this year: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/ANNE/results.php

One of the greatest things about the AN-NE Marketing Awards is the chance to learn from what is working for your peers. Soon, images of the winning and finalist entries will be added, and articles about the winners will be coming in the 2010 Professional Photographer magazine.

In the meantime, consider the following thoughts about marketing from an AN-NE judge:

  • A consistent look and feel across all campaign pieces is essential. Make sure your campaigns are "pulled together" and speak effectively to your target audience. Every audience is different and a message or campaign that works for one may not fit another at all; however, consistency of graphical look and feel across all marketing materials will leverage your investment and give your marketing a very professional look.
  • Be creative and target specific audiences with messages and campaigns that get their attention. It's not necessarily about how much money you spend, it's about getting above the noise and making yourself stand out in a highly competitive environment.
  • Track and measure return on investment. If you're spending hard-won dollars on marketing without measuring results, then don't spend another dime until you have mechanisms in place to understand performance. If you find your marketing isn't earning its keep, then it's time to look for ways to better target markets, find new customers or discover more innovative (and less expensive) ways to reach your audiences.

Congratulations to all the AN-NE Marketing Awards winners and finalists!

For more information and advice about marketing, look to the Vital Signs newsletter every week and watch for new marketing education and resources coming from PPA in 2010.

Dear PPA Member,

I think that this is probably the most difficult introduction that I've ever written. I have so much to say, yet I can't seem to begin.

So, I'll begin this way. Heroes walk among us every day. Some you'll readily recognize: those in the Armed Forces (or who have served), firefighters, police officers. There are also heroes, however, who make a profound and lasting difference, but do so quietly. These are the invisible heroes, and they are everywhere--especially in the photographic industry.

Bravery comes in many forms. I'm in constant awe of not only those who put themselves in harm's way to protect others, but also those who willingly open their hearts to others, even when the circumstances cause their own hearts to break while they are helping.

In the midst of mourning, a group of heroes emerge to give families lasting images of their children who will never grow older. They are the photographers who volunteer for the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation. This week's Vital Signs shares information about what they do--and how you can get involved.

These photographers are my heroes.

Cheers,
Christel Aprigliano

Dear PPA Member,

They line the hallways and stairwells of homes, in carefully placed groupings or ramrod single files. Images of children--showing the progression of time, special moments and, often, exuberant joy--are some of the most touching photographs. Whether formal or candid, you can almost hear someone say to these kids, right before the button is pushed: "Smile!"

What if the child couldn't smile?

This week's Vital Signs shares important information about a wonderful opportunity to bring new clients to your studio (or bring existing clients back). Hopefully, it also inspires you to reach out and look at what you can do on a larger scale. Whether you go through Operation Smile and PPA Charities or through your own personal choice of charity or organization, you can use your talent and give your own gift to the world.

The majority of our Vital Signs articles are about making sure that you stay successful in business--and much of the time, they are about staying financially successful. Sometimes, though, it's good to think about success from another point of view. Hopefully, this will inspire you...to inspire others.

Cheers,

Christel Aprigliano
