In Memory: Leonard (Len) Levy

|

Lenlevy_3 One of the true giants in our profession has passed away, Leonard (Len) Levy, a gentleman in every sense of the word.

Len has educated hundreds of photographers during his life. Teaching the Basic course at NEIPP, for over 38 years, has earned him the title "Mr. NEIPP". He enjoyed working with new photographers coming into the profession, along with some very seasoned ones also. His "true stories" will be remembered by everyone he taught. Len created the foundation on which so many have prospered, and he will be missed by everyone who had the extreme pleasure of knowing him. NEIPP will not be the same without him.

His funeral will be held on Thursday February 28th. At 11:00 AM from the Stanetsky - Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, Salem, MA. Followed by intermemt in Maple Hill Cemetery, Peabody, Memorial observance will be held at his late residence on Thursday, Friday until sundown, and on Saturday evening. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Len's memory to the PPANE scholarship Fund c/o Roland Laramie P. O. Box 316, Willimantic, CT 06226

If you can make the funeral it would be a great tribute to this wonderful gentleman, who gave so much of himself. Chick Here to Make an Everlasting Memorial

To honor a rare accomplishment in PPA competitions, the PPA Board has approved the Imaging Excellence Bar (IE Bar). This bar is only received if an image maker is able to earn an additional 13 Loan Merits from PPA…on top of the first 13 required for the Imaging Excellence Award. The IE Bar will be presented for every 13 additional Loan Merits earned.

The original Imaging Excellence Award was created by the Photographic Exhibitions Committee (PEC), honoring the outstanding image makers who earn 13 Loan Merits and have one or more PPA Master Degrees. This award, presented during the Imaging USA Awards & Degree Ceremony, provides an opportunity for competitors to reach a higher level…beyond their Master Degrees. And now, those who exhibit an even greater skill in photographic competition are recognized with this IE Bar.

Dear PPA Member,

Are past customers and media buyers looking for you because they want to have a photo reproduced? What about today’s customers who look for you years from now…after you have moved?

Protecting your copyright is too important to leave to chance. PPA has teamed up with other photographic associations to create the Photographer Registry at www.photographerregistry.com, making it easier for the public to locate photographic copyright owners.

Drive-Imaging: Beyond Backup

|

Your image files may be backed up, are your applications? What about your system software? How long will it take you to locate all of your install disks, serial numbers, and activation codes to re-install your software?

If you cannot afford that kind of down-time, consider drive-imaging to create a virtual image of your entire hard drive.   With a drive image back-up, you'll save not only your data but your programs, drivers, and all the settings that make your machine yours.

Read Edward Mendelson's article on pcmag.com and see how he rates 5 popular drive-imaging software packages.

At the 2008 PMA Show in Las Vegas, Mitsubishi presented its new CP-3800DW high speed 8 x 10 digital color printer, the CP-9800DW high speed 5 x 7 printer, and the DPS Kiosk 7000. In addition, Mitsubishi gave the public its first look at the new Mini-DPS System, a soon to be released portable digital photo management and printing station.

Copyright RECON: CVS Photo Centers

|

The first RECON mission of 2008 will investigate CVS Photo Centers. Please visit your local CVS store during the next month and help PPA determine their level of copyright compliance.

As a RECON volunteer, PPA is asking you to:

1.   Go to your local CVS. To find the CVS with a photo center nearest you click here.  You can elect to search for stores "with 1-hour photo" services.

2.   Ask them to make a copy of a clearly marked copyrighted print.

3.   If they say no, politely thank them for their time and simply leave. Do not attempt to talk them into copying it. If they do make the copy, be sure to keep the copy and your receipt as proof of the transaction. Also, any information you can provide regarding the staff person who assists you and any other details relating to your visit to the photo center is extremely helpful.

Regardless of the outcome of your visit, please let us know how it goes by sending an e-mail to mmatthews@ppa.comThe deadline for completing this effort is Friday, March 14, 2008

Once this effort is complete, PPA will share the overall results with RECON members and contact CVS with the results. Thank you in advance for your assistance in helping to enforce the rights of all professional photographers.

938 During October 2007, participating member studios of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) from across the country joined together for “Family Portrait Month,” a national fund-raising effort to benefit Operation Smile. On January 5, during PPA's Imaging USA 2008 convention in Tampa, Fl., PPA Charities presented a $52,000 check to Carl Treleaven, Operation Smile Board of Directors Treasurer. This was the third year this campaign took place and this year’s donation to Operation Smile was the highest to date.
