Available Copyright Advocacy Materials and Support Help Raise the Bar in the Industry

ATLANTA, GA. – In keeping with its dedication to photographers, Professional Photographers of America (PPA) offers a variety of copyright resources to everyone—not just its 27,000 members—to raise awareness of the laws and copyright ownership.

Among the resources PPA provides is a free-to-all copyright kit, which gives advice for photographers, retailers and consumers about copyright ownership. The kit is available for download at ppa.com/FreeCopyrightKit.

PPA is also lending its voice to the photography industry regarding copyright. In March, the association participated in an Orphan Works Roundtable on Capitol Hill. Orphan works, loosely defined as copyright-protected material where the copyright owner is unknown or cannot be located, have been a topic of conversation in the capital for almost a decade. With the vast majority of these "orphans" being photographs and other works of visual arts, the outcome of the ongoing discussions will have a great impact on the photographic industry as a whole.

PPA's Washington presence was strengthened by an April agreement with The Nickles Group, LLC. As one of the preeminent lobbying firms on the Hill, the Nickles Group will help PPA's lobbying efforts for photographers' copyrights. The agreement makes PPA the only professional photography association with a full-time presence on Capitol Hill.

Thanks to this partnership, PPA photographers are now being put front and center on copyright defense issues, a coup for the non-profit association given the recent discussions on orphan works and the U.S. Copyright office's push for the Next Great Copyright Act.

In addition to having the photography world's only copyright and government affairs department, PPA provides a wealth of resources for photographers online, including the previously mentioned copyright kit, sample contracts and model releases. For more information, visit ppa.com/copyright.
