Professional photographers are flocking to PPA, thanks in part to a new member benefit that gives eligible members $15,000 worth of equipment insurance (called PhotoCare). In fact, PPA membership has increased by 10%--to over 24,000 members--since October 2011.

That's a lot of professional photographers--a lot of new, qualified customers for you!

As you well know, the photography industry is not static. New techniques and technologies always appear. That is one reason why photographers should seek constant education to remain at the top of their game. And one of PPA's member benefits helps photographers do just that: the Merit & Degree program.

When you hear "degree," you might think of what you receive after completing a university curriculum. But a PPA professional degree is different--it's a way photographers can track and promote their ongoing progress in the industry. Since 1937, PPA has used the Merit & Degree program to encourage members to grow and to recognize achievement that meet our high standards in art and service.

And that focus on growth is really the heart of the matter. The steps taken to earn PPA merits and degrees--from excelling in competition to continual education and service--only help strengthen photographers' skills. Plus, clients often see degrees as symbols of quality. So earning a PPA degree can give photographers one more reason for telling potential clients why they should call them, rather than the competitor down the street. All of this can lead to more successful photographers, which can also spell out good things for vendors in the industry!

Support from business partners like you is part of how PPA is able to make the industry stronger through benefits like the Merit & Degree program. We constantly encourage members to never be done learning, an attitude that can help them successful image-makers for years to come. And that only helps your business, too.

New benefit gives members a $15,000 policy covering photographic equipment and computers.

In the beginning of October, PPA made a landmark decision that will help protect its members' businesses and put hundreds of dollars back into their pockets each year. In a move never before seen in the industry, PPA released a new benefit to pay for $15,000 in equipment insurance coverage for each of its Professional Active and Life members living in the United States. The decision adds yet another unmatched membership benefit to a list that already dramatically outpaces any other photographic organization.

The policy, called PhotoCare, covers photographic equipment losses up to $15,000, including up to $5,000 for certain computer equipment. PPA members can also purchase additional equipment insurance and general liability policies through Lockton Affinity, PPA's exclusive insurance partner. That coverage will come at a significantly reduced rate negotiated by PPA. However, no additional insurance purchase is necessary to receive the initial coverage paid for by PPA.

"Most photographers have tens of thousands of dollars wrapped up in gear and computer equipment that is critical to their businesses," says Don Dickson, PPA president. "This PhotoCare benefit helps photographers protect their livelihood and is absolutely essential. Our members need this."

Together, PPA and our business partners like you make the entire industry stronger. One way PPA does this is through our member benefits, and your support is a large part of how we're able to offer such comprehensive programs and services. Take our full-time, dedicated Copyright and Government Affairs department--it helps protect and speak up for our photographers (and the industry in general), and we are the only professional photographic association to provide such help.

Helping photographers protect copyrights & their businesses
PPA's Copyright and Government Affairs department provides a wealth of resources to help members protect and defend their copyrights, which helps them successfully secure their images and their livelihood.  In addition, we maintain a regular presence on Capitol Hill, discussing copyright and small business issues as they directly affect pro photographers.

For example, we're excited about two key pieces of online copyright enforcement legislation that were introduced in the U.S. Senate. The new PROTECT IP Act would give law enforcement the tools needed to target operators of sites engaged in for-profit trafficking of counterfeit and unlicensed copyrighted products. In addition, the other new Senate bill (S.978) would establish harsher penalties for illegal streaming.

PPA's Copyright and Government Affairs department also helped develop the Artists Against Digital Theft website to unite all creators who suffer digital copyright theft: artistsagainstdigitaltheft.com. This new site explains digital theft problems and solutions, allows visitors to share stories, and provides direct links and ideas for taking action.

Spreading awareness on Capitol Hill
Through our advocacy on Capitol Hill, we also work to ensure the general public understands the importance of copyright laws pertaining to the photographic industry. That's why PPA and the Copyright Alliance co-hosted the "Recording Our History: Faces Behind the Camera" briefing for congressmen and their staff.

The event was the first of many Capitol Hill briefings focusing on photography and the copyright community at large--an effort by PPA and the Copyright Alliance to educate legislators on the importance of maintaining strong copyright laws.  Building on its success is a September 2011 photography exhibit to be hosted in the Russell Senate Office Building. This exhibit will feature images contributed by photographers Denis Reggie, PPA President Don Dickson, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, and PPA member Peter Lik, M.Photog., among others.

PPA works hard to protect and educate its members regarding their copyright "rights" to help them remain successful image-makers for years to come. And that only helps your business, too!

Many of your photographer customers compete because it pushes them to fine-tune and refresh their imagery. And PPA's annual International Photographic Competition (IPC) is the gold standard. (The 2011 results are online now:  www.ppa.com/competitions/international.php)

One thing that makes the IPC different from other photographic competitions is that the images are judged according to a standard of excellence, not against each other. The jurors--made up of professional photographers--are carefully trained to evaluate images based on stringent guidelines for technique, composition and creativity. This standard of excellence is a point of pride with PPA members, not only from a perspective of recognition, but also as an opportunity to evaluate their work, improve their craft and strengthen their businesses.

"A professional photographer who approaches every client engagement as if it's an entry for the International Photographic Competition will consistently produce better images, and that will translate into more clients," says Tomas Muñoz, a multiple Loan Collection winner from Florida.

The most recent IPC took place this summer, with over 4,000 entries. Over 1,500 images were selected for the General Collection and just over 600 (15 percent) were selected for the esteemed Loan Collection--the best of the best. Both collections will be on display January 15-17, 2012, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La., during Imaging USA, the convention and trade show for pro photographers. This International Photographic Exhibit will be open to the public, and admission is free.
