Dennis Craft runs a successful portrait studio in the historic town of Marshall, MI. His work includes many photographic areas, but he is best known for his imaginative children's photography. Craft Photography opened in 1979 in a storefront in downtown Marshall. Since 1999, the studio has been outside the city on thirteen acres that serve as a perfect backdrop for their fanciful child portraiture.
A Michigan Top-Ten Photographer twelve times, Dennis enjoys working in a natural light situation (window light and environmental portraits are his specialties). Twelve of his merit prints have been selected into the International Loan Collection, three exhibited at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center, and one was on display in the International Photography Hall of Fame. Craft was named Photographer of the Year in Michigan (1992 & 1996). He’s also earned his PPA Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees and the Fellowship Degree from the American Society of Photographers. In addition, he is a past president of PPA.
Dennis has spoken in many places over the years, including national, state, and regional conventions and numerous local affiliate events. This doesn’t even include all the photography schools he’s taught at, like Winona International School of Photography, West Coast School, MAIPP Professional Photography School, Mid-Atlantic Regional School of Photography, Texas School, and Georgia School! Students from all over the country have enjoyed his unique teaching style and his practical solutions and ideas for developing and improving their own photographic style.
Instructors: Dennis CraftVideo: Photographing children can be like herding cats, so the last thing you want to do is mess with your lighting during a shoot! Dennis explains exactly what to do so that you light your “little subjects” properly. He starts with the basics: The importance of a studio setup where everything is ready, child-safe and your attention is focused on the kids. Then, he’ll walk you through the tools that make the most of your different shoots, including for his low key and high key demos.
Instructors: Dennis CraftVideo: In-home portraiture is not only super convenient, but creates a very touching, personal image. Building on the client relationship with the client, Dennis shows how he interacts with his subjects – especially the kids – and how that interaction elicits the best poses, expressions and eventually, images. More than just a class on lighting, this course tells you how to shoot on location, even a client’s home, and own it!
Instructors: Dennis CraftVideo: They’re not grumpy teens; they’re not in the terrible two’s. Children ages 5-12 might be considered in the “golden ages” of child photography. They can understand what you want, listen to instructions and, in general, work with you for a successful session. Dennis Craft teaches you how to capitalize on that to capture the best images possible…and increase your sales opportunities!
Instructors: Dennis CraftVideo: Photographing children can be chaos…and at the end, everyone’s exhausted. Yet in this class, instructor Dennis Craft shares how to direct that chaos as much as possible for a successful toddler session that makes everyone (not just your subject) smile.
Instructors: Dennis CraftVideo: In this class, Dennis shares his wisdom and expertise on window lighting and how to best use it in your photos! Discover the four basic patterns that you can create. Discuss how to move your subject – since you can’t move your window – so as to make the various patterns. Learn what qualities to look for in your lighting, such as “North light.”
