    Lightbulb Military Rates!

Just as a tickler... I was able to book a room today at the Residence Inn San Antonio Downtown/Market Square for $103 per night. As you are calling hotels and inquiring for rooms as they become more scarce, don't forget to check on other room rates that might be available - military, AAA, AARP, etc. I was a little frustrated in finding a room that didn't require a HUGE downpayment when I remembered this little tidbit... Good Luck!

No kidding, getting hard to find a place nearby.

Found The St. Anthony - A Wyndham Historic Hotel *(three blocks or so) for $161 a night.

So the website went live with dates and the whole city was already nearly sold out. What's up with that? Is this just a *major* oversight on someone's part?

I was really looking forward to going this year, but more and more it's seeming like it is very poorly put together. Any insight on this?

Also, might be a good idea to update the website seeing as at least two hotels (Westin and Sheraton) that I called yesterday are sold out.

    I'm so sad.

David - I'm just guessing here and I'm sure someone in the know can give a better explanation - When a convention is booked at a hotel, the organization blocks a certain number of rooms, estimating to the best of their ability and past history how many will probably be reserved. If they overestimate and block too many that aren't used, then the organization has to pay for those unsold rooms. That happened - obviously on a smaller scale, here in NE one time. The event chairman wanted to use a rather expensive hotel. Consequently many attendees chose to stay across the street at a more reasonable priced location and the block of rooms did not get used. PPN had to pay for all those unused rooms. Maybe PPA did not block enough rooms - but I'm guessing the block was based on what was used at past conventions and how could they know so many people would reserve rooms so far in advance if that had never happened before. Say you photograph a wedding and get to the reception and the bride springs on you that she wants table shots of every table. If that has never been done before at any wedding you've photographed, she really can't fault you for poor planning can she? If PPA blocked too many rooms and ended up having to pay for unused rooms then some would complain that they weren't be careful with our dues moneys. I am sure that with this new developement of greater advance room registrations and consequently larger overall attendence, that the number of rooms blocked for next year will be re-evaluated. Also, PPA has no control over other events occuring in San Antonio at the same time. I would speculate that something else is going on and also contributing to the room shortage. It's too bad rooms are in short supply but I can remember receiving emails and being told many times to book early, that rooms are going fast,I think I even was told that last year in Austin - to book early. So PPA has tried to keep the membership informed about this challenge. I hope you find a room and I hope to see you there!

OK, I stand corrected. I had heard that all the rooms were sold out but decided to call anyway. I booked my room today at the Holiday Inn. I got conference pricing for the 11th through the 16th and had to pay 20 bucks more for the 10th only! This was this afternoon. I did think while I was on the line to ask for my pals here and as of this afternoon they still had *at least* 14 rooms available.

I *will* be there, after all!

....................sorry, gotta put up with me!
