For those of us not going, please post images here of everything going on. Fun, crazy, outrageous ... and more. Plus if any forum members go up on stage and get a degree medalion around their necks ... lets's see them.

Craig,

I am so sorry you will not be at the convention. I was looking forward to meeting you. Maybe next time. Thank you for all the help you have given me on my images. I am excited to see mine hanging, I have three there. We will be thinking about you.

Hi Sandra;

Tell our Pa. state assn. president, Chuck Lewis, that you know me from on here. Also, ask Karen Linsely, Cindi K, McDaniel, or Jeff Drahowski about me. All have been to one of our Pa. state assn. meetings. And if you see anyone else from Pa. you can ask if they know me. I've been a member since 1978.

Thanks a bunch for sharing a glimpse of the fun down south.

I worked it Don. Guy's gotta have some fun and these ladies made it fun for me!

By the way John Heckler....................... OH....Does that stand for "Oh! The big ten just can't beat the SEC?" Sorry about that buddy. Guess that was a bummer for you. I am a Razorback and my Razorbacks beat LSU. Well, there's always next year. Just make sure the SEC isn't in the final game though. It was great meeting you so don't hate me for ribbing you. :)

IT'S A "TRIP" and a half!

Now, some of the new friends are being awarded tonight. Not going to carry my DSLR, but will carry a P&S.

Someone who lives near Phoenix out to set up a pre-con trip to Grand Canyon!

Ron, Thanks for posting the pics.

I finally saw a gecko! Of course, it was during the print exhibit. My apologies to the maker for such a bad copy. Have I mentioned that I have no clue how to use this camera? (My son had BEGGED me to find him a gecko and take a picture of it for him. literally begged. I blame Geico.)

Liz_Vance
01-09-2008, 04:21 AM
And last but not least, the images that at least 4 or 5 of you have been waiting for!

The hotel lobby assignment - take my P&S camera (technically, my friend's camera), and shoot up, and make an interesting image. Only rule - you had to keep your butt in the chair. That rule was interpreted rather liberally by a couple people. You know who you are. And you only got two shots. Except for the people who chose to do more. I had the order of who shot what written down on a cocktail napkin, but I think I may have used it to wipe up a spill. It's awol. We were all within about 15 feet of each other, but it's pretty cool how they look so different. I think so, anyway.

I'm still just happy I found a picture of a gecko for my kid. (Who, it turns out, was actually happier about the crocodile cookie I brought him. And never mentioned the gecko.)

That is an excellent plan!

If we can talk Marc into coming to VPPA, nobody will have to buy a drink. He has a way of procuring them for everyone. They just magically appear in our hands. It's very convenient!

I can't see the images yet - I'll TRY to be patient :-)

Get this - I was on the plane home last night and realized I left my car keys in my hotel room. Ugh!! I'm now the proud driver of an ugly rented minivan (not that I have anything against minivans, it just happens that this one is ugly). I still can't believe I did that!

Hi Heather;

That brought back a memory from a number of years ago. Two friends of mine were driving to our state convention from Pittsburgh and had an accident. They ended up renting an ugly big van they nicknamed "Hank the Tank" so you get an idea what it was like. I hope your keys arrive soon so you can return the rental and get your Lamborghini back.

Oh heather... yuck. That sounds like something I would do. I almost left my coat because housecleaning put it away. Who puts stuff away on vacation? LOL....

It was fabulous seeing everyone. I had a great time, even if I did have to leave a little early. I hear the party last night was great.

Dawn- where are yours?

ONTFL!!!! Oh my heck... I thought MY blunder was bad. I was going to have to get a rental car this week anyway because my rig is getting some body work done... it was just sooner than I anticipated!

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha... oh, Steff... I feel so bad for you! Hope you got it worked out :-) I'm sure Delta (or whatever bloodsucking airline you used) will do anything for you... for a fee.

Oh, wait... that's my philosophy, too! Oops.

Steff, after ALL THAT TIME changing your ticket, and you messed it up!? Well, you could always lay by the pool for a week I guess. But take out a 2nd mortgage on your house to pay for the hotel!

I had a blast too. The best part of the convention was meeting everyone from the forum. I learned some things - both in classes, and just sitting on the patio drinking a beer. The people on this forum are awesome about helping and teaching. And even if I hadn't made it to one single class, it would still be worth the money I spent, because not only did I learn from everyone while I was at the conference, I made so many friends, that I can now call anytime I need help. So my learning will continue long after the conference!

Everyone was sooo nice, (well, okay, a couple of people weren't all that friendly but I guess not everyone is going to like me, lol!) Actually, I can only remember TWO people who were less than thrilled to meet me - haha, I guess that's a pretty good percentage. Oh wait, there were only 2 who allowed me to SEE that they weren't thrilled. Maybe everyone was not wanting to meet me. Maybe that's why the party plans were ALWAYS about 20 blocks from where I was told to show up. Maybe that's why, when I got to the party, everyone was tired and went home at 6:00 in the evening....hmmm...I'm going to have to think about this now.

I'm curious also. What do all these acronyms mean? Anyone have a listing of what they are and what they mean?

The only one that I'm sure of is a "TLA". A "TLA" is a "Three Letter Acronym".

Robin,

The following link has most of the acronyms that are used for either chat or SMS.

I have teenagers, so most of these I find familiar.

Anywhooo... thanks to Keith's advice, I went to the airport anyway. Thanks to Holly's advice, cried and lied to the airline. They let me on with no problem. Suzy - hey, don't forget that you are also an excellant photographer, as well as being Mike's girlfriend! I was impressed too - you remembered my name - you are great with names!! It was great to meet you - and now I know why you weren't selected for Next Top Fashion Photographer - it's because you are too normal, nice, good, honest, etc. Now if you had some tattoos and cussed a little more, maybe you could have gotten on the show!

Cheri-

Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you and Drew. I saw the two of you once outside of the expo, when I was on the run, but that was it except for the awards banquet.

It was kind of cool the way that so many people I didn't know would stop and greet me. Fun. And it pays to be friendly to random people in the bar line. You never know who you are going to meet and how much they might help you out. :D

Oh, and Lori proved to be disappointingly normal. The zany persona is just her web presence. Her husband Gordon is very nice.

Mark, I was only normal around you because I didn't get to know your wife until the last night. I try not to be too crazy in front of people who I don't know. I'm kinda' shy. Your wife is very nice, BTW. It was great getting to meet all the spouses that came. Except John Heckler kept his wife as far from all of us as he could after the first night!

Jackie - I'm working on it. I had a photo shoot today - I used Keith Howe's technique he was telling me about and my pixs did already look better. I need to learn how to use shadow more and such. George - I know - we missed you! It was great meeting you and hanging out in the beginning. I think the ceremony at the aquarium was kind of awkward - the setting and all - was hard to find people and sit down and it ended way to early. We should have coordinated a meeting place and such. You are such a nice, nice man. I have some pixs of you in my batch I will share!

Someone needs to attempt to organize a railway trip to Grand Canyon, from Phoenix. Let's all charter the dome car! I looked at websites last night. Unfortunately, I am unable to find an Embassy Suites within three miles of convention center! I think there is a Hampton Inn, which is also Hilton family with continental breakfast, but no mgr reception.

The last two years, I've caught a T-shirt promoting the next convention, but I missed one at the aquarium! Apparently they did not have enough. Bummer. I roamed all around the party, and only found people from New England! I tried!

How's your Mac and your PC saga?

At airport a Fuji teck rep recognized me from previous years and using StudioMaster in PC, and admitted that it's no longer supported. Any reader: I'd sell a Sony desk Viao.

George - still deciding on mac vs pc - I'm leaning towards mac though.

Will have to check out what there is in AZ next year.

I've got to get some photos up that I have - I have a slew of good ones - I'm going to do a slideshow I think with a link since there are so many! Soooooo many nice people!

Hey you guys - the bowling alley shots will be classic - all because of Michael Barton - I will put my spin on them but they are really his and he will do with them what he wants when he gets the RAW files - his concept, his photos - just housed on my camera......hmm.....they are worth some money - huh???:) So much fun!

I have to do some client stuff first and then I will post them all! You guys are all the best!!!:D

You DO know that PPA members get a DHL discount right?! Ha. I can't wait to play with those! That's what I get for leaving the Mark III in the hotel room. I guess I'll have to deal with the noise. . . HA! We'll just put them in black and white and call them art! Ha! Can't wait.

Linda_Gregory
01-15-2008, 11:51 AM
DHL? I used them at the lab for one short month. We check online for the fastest/cheapest method of shipping before slapping that label on. Anything to save our customers (free shipping but the money's gotta come from somewhere) money.

We got our bill and were shocked at the price. Nothing like was quoted on the web. I paid the bill and stopped using them. They called and I explained that their quotes weren't matching. They suggested I call and see about getting the charges removed. Sure, like I have time to do THAT every day/month/year! No thanks.

George_Hawkins

I have an association discount at FedEx; I think a PPA relationship many years ago, and it's still on my account.

Liz_Vance
01-15-2008, 12:31 PM
Yeah. DHL is my least favorite shipper. I quit using them when I found a box of photos outside in a sandbox. In the rain. I have an enclosed covered porch. EVERYONE else opens the door and puts the boxes inside. I love UPS. (And my current UPS guy is just adorable, which is an added bonus.) :)

DHL? I used them at the lab for one short month.

I will pay extra for ANY other carrier than DHL. They have burned me toooo many times to ever go back, discount or no discount!

Linda - Cute new avatar!

Michael_Barton
01-15-2008, 02:00 PM
Wow! That's kind of amusing! I was kidding about the DHL thing. I was just implying that Dawn could send the CD really quickly and save. Ha. On a serious note, I'm onboard with the Fedex thing. ACI switched the Fedex and life is quite nice. I'll have to look into the Fedex discount.

Sorry for the, ah, controversy! I was only kidding. I'll try not to kid about carriers anymore! Not a laughing matter. . .

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to top my diploma from graduate school. It came folded, torn, run over (seriously), water damaged, and had the appearance that it had jammed in more than one machine. I was in Texas at the time and it was shipped to Chicago. My father bought an oversized cardboard box and sent it too me as is (Fedex, the second box did much better). He shipped it too me because he said I'd never believe him. What a riot. So, I just set it on a shelf to display it the way it was. I figured there was a lot of irony in it! The school didn't flinch to have another made for me at, uh, no charge. . . To this day, the first diploma means more!

Marc - love those images! What lens is that? So very cool.

Ok - I've got my slideshow put together - just a lot of candid photos and many in there are taken by Michael Barton using my camera - will get RAW files to you this week and he will do his magic. The ones of Andrea and bowling alley are his shots. It was such an amazing convention and so much fun to meet everyone. Since I had a lot of images, I just put on my phanfare account and then merged a couple of songs together - like the dancing one we heard EVERY night - lol! Hope you guys enjoy and if you would like an image individually, just let me know! Happy Wednesday. I feel so priviliged to have met each and every one of you and I am thankful for this community here and the other forums - joined Michaels and I'm also on pro4um - so I'll post there as well! You guys are the best - I mean that literally:) I have some captions in the show - so read if you can:)

Hi Dawn;

That is, by far the biggest glimpse into the fun everyone had ... for those of us who weren't there !!! I loved the bowling alley artistic series. In all my years of league bowling I never had gorgeous women draped around my ankles even for my best scores. I now feel slighted. (should have had an image like that when I rolled my 275 scratch game or my 689 scratch series)

I liked the transitions. What software was used ?

Andrea_Chapelo

Very Nice Dawn! That show is great! Glad you used our favorite song:D

Craig - I used just the phanfare software. I heard about this from Bambi Cantrell a couple years back in Vegas. I use it for my personal stuff - but I've also used for business a couple times when my bludomain isn't working right. You pay like $55 for the year or $300 lifetime - their site is www.phanfare.com - I think it is pretty classy. You can control if clients download, etc. kinda - best to put watermark. I used Garage Band on my mac to merge the 2 songs into one mp3 to upload since you can only upload one music file at a time. They are going through some changes and will be updating their software, but I have all my important personal files housed on this one. I do love it for this purpose:) Easy and simple to use. Hope to meet you someday soon!

How do you get a hotlink to your own website in your signature here? I can't figure that out.

Andrea - that is our favorite song - huh?:) so much fun!

D. Craig- you must have been bowling in the wrong league.

Just got back this evening from Disney World and now I have to negotiate jet lag. Funny what a week and a half will do to ya:)

Great photos everyone! Wish I was able to spend more time with y'all. This convention was all about Leslie, so I followed wherever the hand lead me. I do have some marvelous images of her with her medallion on while she was in bed aleeping and coming out of the shower....but they need some sort of security clearance :D

Great to see that all of you had a great time too! Keith, looks like your critiquing at the convention turned you into a chick magnet, LOL. I have some images of Marc with the California award winners, as soon as I get in the studio tomorrow.

S5 correct?
If you like and will use it, I have an S5 hat: red with "S5 Pro" in white on the front and "FUJIFILM" on the back. I've been user of S1, S2, S3 (all sold as I upgraded), and I anticipated buying S5, but bought D200 for variety of reasons.

Stephanie - Jackie is right - you have one heck of a personality:) So GREAT to meet you too! I love you all! I'm sitting here listening to Hannah Montanah with my kids - woo hoo!

Ok - songs - the first song was ""Turn My Camera On" by Spoon - I think that is right. And Lori - I'm so impressed you paid $11.99 to watch the show - you rock!

I'm so pumped from Imaging - can you tell I don't get out much - well that is not true - I do get out with my friends - but there is something about hanging out with photographer friends who have the same interest, passion, etc. I so love that about this!

Lori - I will pm you tonight or tomorrow about your other questions. I'm just so sad about those I did not meet:) But I am forever thankful to those who graced me with their presence - it was unbelievable beyond my expectations. Dawn,

It is very addictive! I have tried to combine extra days at sites recently. I did go to PPA conventions way long ago: once Chicago, once Atlantic City many years ago. Then consecutively since Atlantic City in 2002, Las Vegas twice, New Orleans, Austin, San Antonio, and Tampa. Not to ramble on, but in 02, from Atlantic City I drove to visit relatives in Annapolis, MD; from Vegas I went to Grand Canyon & Red Rocks national park. In San Antonio I went a day early and played tourist in City: Alamo, etc. This time, I visited relatives southwest of Sarasota for six days prior, and they left me at ES, as their place was rented out starting the Friday.

Maybe from Phoenix, someone could organize a trip to Grand Canyon (less hurried than I did before); the train ride looks very interesting! The dome car!

George

BTW, if anyone is PPA member for less than three years, she/he may be eligible for $500 scholarship to attend NEIPP school, April 6-11 this year. Look at the courses at www.neipp.com for all the details. PM me.
