I've attached my short lighting image that was submitted and failed because her face wasn't turned 'enough'.

For you to have short lighting, you first must have the face properly positioned. You can't do short lighting if you don't have a short side to the face. In this case, she is looking straight towards the camera and there is no broad or short side to the face. Normally, for short lighting, the head is turned slightly to one side showing the ear on the near side and not showing the ear on the far side. The light comes from the side opposite the near ear and drops the ear into shadow. In your example, her face should have been turned more to her right (camera left).
