I know that today is the last day for judging. I wonder if they'll have a list posted at the convention. If so, maybe we could find a spy to see what our scores are and message them to us. :)

We are just wrapping up day 2 of judging. Prints will be hung in the display late tonight for the print exhibit opening tomorrow at 8 AM.

Digital entries will be shown on 40" plasmas in a room adjacent to the print display. The scores/names will be on the slideshow slides - so send your spies there to sit through the slideshow and take notes. :)

The schedule on the PPO website has the images being displayed until 3pm on Sunday. If you end up going Amy, would you mind letting me know what my scores are? I did all prints. If you are open to checking, I can message you thumbnails of my prints along with their titles. If not, it's no big deal. I'll just have to pretend to be patient. :)

Hope you did well!

If it makes you feel better, it couldn't possibly get a 63 at a District judging.
The scale only goes down to 65 on the low side...

Cat, I think the results take about a week?

To be fair, I did hear how one of my prints did from someone who went down to watch the judging. She didn't see the rest of my images though.

And this is what makes the anticipation about the rest of me prints even worse, lol!

Oh, ok - I wasn't sure if you knew - but scores are all finalized and it is official. :) I don't have scores in front of me, so I can't tell you about your others. There's no forgetting that an image scored a 100, so that one is easy to confirm. :)

lol, sorry this thread got hijacked everyone :)

Angela, I had a mild panic attack right before I sent this in. I changed the few things that we talked about at PPM and set it to the lab. Somehow it came back to me and the color was off compared to the first print. I called JD's right away (this was Thursday afternoon and I had to ship on Tuesday!) and they reprinted and had it in my hands the next day. The frame shop had it mounted by Tuesday at 130 and had to ship it by 330, lol. Luckily my case made it there before the deadline on Wednesday, but I was worried :)

The only way to get feedback from the judges at a District judging is to attend the judging and try to catch one of the judges in the print exhibit after the judging is over - usually they will wander around and give critiques to the participants on how to improve their images.

The only PPA judging that offers critiques is the IPC. The image critiquing at the IPC is a big thing and takes a lot of the judges time. It's planned out timewise since after the EI and Wedding Album judgings are completed in the first two days, we usually have more judges than we need at the end of the week to run the "For Merit" and "Loan" judging rooms so they are available to critique the images - and the judges are all there for 4-5 days. At a District judging, it only takes a day or two and there are fewer categories plus they don't have to do a Loan Collection judging - so after the judging is completed and the trophy selection is over, many of the judges leave and go home, unless they are speaking at the convention. If they offered critiques at the District judgings, the cost of entry would have to be raised significantly since they would have to hold judges over for another day or two to do the critiques - and that costs money for the judges honorarium, additional hotel costs, meals, etc...

Rick_Massarini
03-23-2012, 01:03 AM
What are the thoughts on displaying images that merited for marketing if they are also going to be sent to international?

Displaying images that "sealed" at a District is not a problem. Marketing is what it's all about - and if you can use them for marketing, go for it - you just can't say that the image is a "PPA Merit" yet, since it is not a merit until it is sent to the next IPC.

In the rare case that a PPA juror does see your image, and they find themselves sitting on a panel to judge it for Loan, they will just DQ themselves and let the rest of the panel decide on your image - for Loan, they often increase the size of the panel to 1.5 - 2 times the usual number of jurors - there are extra jurors there so in case one or two DQ, there are still enough there to make a good decision. At the IPC we often have 2 or 3 Loan panels running at the same time near the end of the week, and at the beginning of the week, we usually have 5-6 panels for Merit running at the same time.

Just don't forget to send any sealed images on to the IPC - they don't receive merits until they are received at the IPC, so if you seal an entry at Northeast but don't send it to the IPC, you lose that merit.

cat_broderick

We were advised not to show images from State before Districts but it makes sense we can now. Thanks for asking, Randy, and Congrats again! :)

Thanks Rick for the clarification. That's what I was thinking but wanted to make sure. Thanks Cathy.

Rick_Massarini
03-23-2012, 01:41 AM
I understand some judges saying not to show the image before the District judging so that the judges will not see them in advance and have to abstain from judging the image - but the reality is that if the judges from a state convention stay around through the end of the event, they have often been caught by participants in the print exhibit and asked for critiques, and if they attend the awards ceremony, they have seen the makers receive their awards and usually have seen the winning images projected at the banquet/ceremony. So if they were a judge and speaker at a state convention, they may have to DQ themselves - BUT - at the IPC, there are sometimes 5 or 6 panels running at the same time - so the odds are 5 to 1 against them being on that panel when the image comes around to be judged. Plus, that also assumes that the judge will remember the image and the maker - and if they judge and speak at many conventions in a year, they may just not remember the image - or who created the image - or what it scored the last time - when it comes up before them to judge - so they may not have to DQ themselves anyway since they may just not remember the image...

Stephanie_Millner
03-23-2012, 12:07 PM
Rick, it's cuz' I'm whiny. :) The last 2 years were 4-for-4 on client work. This year, I sent 3 pieces of travel stuff (mostly due to the workshop promotion). My one "client" image (aka, style I always shoot for clients) got an 89, but one of my Rome photos didn't merit - and of course, THAT's what I'm stuck on. I'm very happy that my Hong Kong one got an 81 though... that was under hot debate and I was advised not to submit it, particularly not with that title. Oh, and I'm lazy, so I'm all "inconvenienced" by having to pick a new 4th print!

cat_broderick
03-23-2012, 12:33 PM
Stephanie-curious...
...you wont submit that one print that didnt merit at Districts to Nationals? I have heard from sooo many people it was a crazy judging year....that print may very likely merit at IPC even without the seal. (Or course this is my inexperienced opinion, curious to others thoughts)

Stephanie_Millner
03-23-2012, 12:59 PM
If it scored a 79, I'd probably send it anyway. But I see something that could be changed, and it scored a 77 - so I would hold this one back. There's other stuff I can send.

Christine_Walsh-Newton
03-23-2012, 01:10 PM
Steph - I feel your pain. I went 4/4 the past 2 years. I'm spoiled. I went 2/4 at NE this year and had 2 78's. One scored an 82 at KY, so I'll probably forward it. The other 78 - I see an issue with it that I"m not sure the judges saw, so I'm going to ditch it and replace. It didn't deserve the 78.

joemama
03-23-2012, 02:47 PM
Well I feel a little better about my triple 78's. This is why I wanted to hear the judges comments. It would be helpful to be able to buy a video (like the one Greg Yager posted a while back) which presents the images and the judges bantering real time about the scores they were giving. This was helpful and for people like me (first time in competition) it would be invaluable learning material. I understand what Rick was saying and I certainly wouldn't expect the judges to stay another day much less would I want the fees to go up as a result. But I would buy a DVD of the scoring/judging. I'd pay $25-$50 for something like that... It's not hard to record the event anyway. Producing and distributing the DVD's is a bit of a chore but if I am not alone in my desire to have something like this...it may be worth while. I don't really know what is truly involved and I'm sure there are logical reasons for why this isn't available. Perhaps it is too late to ask but.... It's not available right? I didn't search real deep but I did check and was unable to find a dvd for sale. I didn't see it anywhere when I registered or submitted my image files. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Christine_Walsh-Newton
03-23-2012, 02:53 PM
It's only available on the IPC level (International) which is in June. I believe the fee is $35.

This is why it's important to belong to an affiliate or state group and hobnob with masters and folks that have received juror training.

I only had 1 out of 4. I'm disappointed as I actually did better last year, which was my first year entering.

Stephanie_Millner

The PPA Photographic Exhibition Committee does not allow PEC affiliate judgings (District and IPC) to be recorded or filmed. There is no DVD made available of the actual judging. Southwest recorded the judging and was planning on posting the recording on their website a few years ago, but they had to erase the video before it was posted. I can understand the PEC's position and their reasons for making this decision. Even though live recording of the actual judging is not permitted, they do offer personal video critiques of images entered in the IPC.

Yes, the sophomore jinx. Often it comes down to this: in your first year entering, you had your entire career to pick through to find 4 prints. The next year, you had only a year's worth of prints to pick from. Even though you got better, you are still learning how to pick 'em (and prepare them).

Rick_Massarini
03-24-2012, 09:38 PM
...in your first year entering, you had your entire career to pick through to find 4 prints. The next year, you had only a year's worth of prints to pick from...
In the far distant past, you had to sign a certification that the photographs were created in the last 12 months - then they extended that to 24 months and it was 24 months for a long time - then they eliminated the time period altogether, and you only need to certify that you created the image - of course, since there is no time stamp on a negative, it's always been on the honor system since there was no real way to prove when someone created an image ...

Happy to say mine were from the last twelve months. But, since they were all from travel, and 3 from Italy, I guess I just have to keep traveling. :)

Yes, the sophomore jinx. Often it comes down to this: in your first year entering, you had your entire career to pick through to find 4 prints. The next year, you had only a year's worth of prints to pick from. Even though you got better, you are still learning how to pick 'em (and prepare them).

So true, Mark. And Rick, thanks for the clarification on that rule. Ive heard they had to be from this year but couldn't find anything stating such. Mine were all from the past twelve months, but I may be digging in the archives for replacements

Can anyone clarify the rule on subjects? If I had the same person or persons in a completely different setting/ pose etc, is that allowed or no? I have several repeat clients I've worked with and have been trying to avoid duplicates in entry

You cannot enter more than one image of a subject no matter how it is handled. Entering two images of the same subject even if it is from separate sessions will result in the images being disqualified.

Thanks Rick. That's what I thought, but appreciate knowing for sure!

Just in the same competition year, right? I could save a duplicate subject to submit in next year's competition?
