I return from AfterDark humbled, flattered, excited and inspired. A special thank you to Kevin Focht for his enthusiastic support which could not be more meaningful for me, and to all the other mentors who showed me such kindness and respect. Nancy Goldstein I got back from my first AD in Charlotte last night, checked my bank balance, and registered for Tucson a few minutes ago. I've never been out west and am already having trouble sitting still I'm so excited! Do yourself a favor and grab one of the best educational experiences you'll ever have. Just got back from my second After Dark Education experience! For all my my photographer fans/friends out there you simply MUST check it out. You will never go back to a normal convention again. I returned late last night from After Dark in Charlotte and all I can say "still" is WOW. This was my second After Dark experience (1st Cincinnati), and what I know now is, it will not be my last. I'd been straddling the fence on whether to attend WPPI or After Dark and hands down, After Dark wins out. Let me tell you why. After Dark (my opinion) addresses all my needs as a photographer. I have always learned best when I am in the thick of things, doing the work that allows me to get the results I'm after. At After Dark, you are afforded the opportunity to meet with the individual photographers, talk to them, pick their brains and shoot with them. You make the selection of who you want to experience and it's up to you to get in there and make it happen.
To quote the awesome Dan Fievalt “if you surround yourself with talented people your skills will improve”.
The first experience is like drinking out of a fire hose! There are more opportunities that you can take advantage of. It’s helpful to know what skills you want to learn in order to grow or start your business. There are experiences in every aspect of photography. The coolest aspect is that it’s all hands on. The mentors are amazing in how freely they offer their experiences to us. They don’t just tell you their successes but they also share their failures and what they did wrong. They want us to learn from them, that’s why they are there.

After Dark Charlotte was an amazing experience. I love every miniute of it and will not attend another wppi after experiencing after dark. I cant wait to use all that i took away from after dark and apply it to my work and business. Hoping to see you all in Az . CHARLOTTE AFTER DARK ROCKED.
First AD was AMAZING. Working on setting up for Tucson now. Worth every penny, although next time I'll have a wheeled camera bag!
People say you should never meet your idols, but this experience has just felt like a metamorphosis. Everyone was so amazing and the organization was professional in every aspect. I cannot wait to attend another event next year!
Had SO much fun at After Dark this week! What an amazing group of people with amazing energy!! Can't wait for Tuscon :0)

Ad has had a long tradition of giving and paying it forward. Tucson we want to try something new. We all know photographers that really deserve a break...some one that has a heart of gold but a streak of bad luck....someone always giving and never taking time for themselves. AD will be accepting no,ignitions for Tucson scholarships....please send any nominations to : AD@afterdarkedu.com with a brief explanation why you think the individual deserves a scholarship to AD....We will try to make their day....play hard...

It is part of the AD commitment...we are going to gather a great group of educators that is concerned about two things....sharing their knowledge...and being able to work with other mentors to improve their knowledge...
It is about hard core education and not having events that that distract from the main goal....most of those attending think the three days straight is a party-social event and the great thing is you learn while playing..... Tucson is going to be the 9th experience in two years...The only way we could be doing this well in this economy is that we are doing things very right....and those attending know it...smile.
It has been an honor to watch a number of the mentors grow form being good to in a short year to become extraordinary and to see other mentors excited to work with other mentors whose work is completely different from their own......IT is a riot to see 12 mentors up at 2 am with small groups of photographers just hanging out and sharing....
It has been outstanding to see AD take on a life of it's own and adapt to each specific experience vs. being rigid and not adapted because everything had been planned for a year already...Heck, We just started planning Tucson 8 weeks ago which gives us the ability to adapt to specific needs we see in the industry...Joe Switzer and the video team is a perfect example..they have gone extreme for Tucson...Julie Klaasmeyer has the newborn/baby tract and is making it rock..... The focus in Tucson is going to be creativity...With Brooke Shaden, Brian DeMint, Ben Shirk, Joel Grimes, Dan McClanahan, Mark Bryany, Lindsay Adler and Dan Frievalt some special things are going to happen....

Also, just a thought. 2 years ago we hired a receptionist to answer phones and book appointments...we noticed a drastic drop in appointments booked over a period of time and decided that she was good at answering phones but not at booking...Our solution was for the new receptionist to book an appointment for the potential client with my office manager who was great at booking. Booking commitments dramatically increased. We realized that the initial contact was the most important aspect of my studio with out exception and that creating a successful system to educate the potential client enough to make them a qualified client. Clients love it because they are well inform by a confidant personality that is able to share the information each client needs to know to make the decisions they need to make...just thoughts...

We are trying for Nashville 2012.......Chicago is way to expensive for our little gathering....The best room rates we could find were above $150.....

All other photography vendors, schools, workshop providers et al---take note of what's happening at AD. You will have to compete with this-- soon-to-be--bar-setting, phenomenal, learning experience.

Susan, AD is not through PPA so no, there would be no merits for attendance.
Clarence, I believe you because I know some of the participants but...I don't know you so I'm afraid your opinion would not mean much. Care to share some info? I always love more opinions.

Can we apply AfterDark for education credits with PPA?
I'm not 100% sure, but attending AD should qualify for educational credit for CPP re-certification, since the re-certification educational credits specify "photographic industry" seminars, so they may not need to be PPA events, but attending AD would not qualify for PPA merits towards a degree unless the event organizer made prior arrangements with PPA for it (or a specific part of it) to be a PPA accredited merit class (and paid the appropriate merit registration fee to PPA for each merit issued).

oh...prepare well Susan, this is by far the best group of mentors we have ever had...Many are excited to be working together and into the rely hours. YOu may not recognize a lot of names but check out the mentor page and their work, You will e blown away by the Mentors with no name recognition. They may not be big on speaking on platforms around the country, but they know how to run their studios...and they definitely know how to create.....thanks for coming to play

Thanks Dave I am preparing feverishly! My only exasperation is so many great folks at the same time means I have to make some tough choices! I have studied each mentor's web site, blog and images to cull my pertinent questions for each regardless of whether I get to attend each session.
I know in this economy; with the influx of so many new folks practicing the craft; technology demands of marketing; digital editing and so forth obstacles can seem unending but I believe this is an electric time of creation of talents, networks and refining latest model of success in this business! I believe the combination of the pods you have put together this time are incredibly spot on for me! I am bringing my most comfy shoes, some reliable equipment, my imagination and most importantly a fertile and spongelike mind to learn and experience! : )

happiness all over...It is great thing we have over 170 classes, not counting the unstructured classes that go all night...That is as many as the huge conventions with over 10,000 people...and we just let 300 in....this is going to be extraordinary!!!

I enjoyed AD Tucson! As a first-timer, I had a few issues but the over all experience was very positive and worth the time and investment. I networked, learned and shared in a welcoming and fun environment. I would encourage everyone to take time to embrace this style of learning/teaching/growing.
@Dave Junion, I was the "crabby-dad" choice in your bit during the welcome. lol
