View Full Version : Passing Portfolios

I passed my image review for recertification!!!!! As I was working on my images for recertification, I saw a post where somebody (I think it was Greg) said it would be helpful to see a passing portfolio.

As you review the gallery, I'd like to provide some insight into the image selection and thought process which went into the creation of this portfolio. First, with my specialty being Weddings, I selected the images which have been published in various bridal magazines (SE01, 03, 09, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20). Next I went through all of my events over the last couple of years and picked out the strongest of the images I delivered to my clients and those I display on-line. After I picked those images, I started eliminating images. I got rid of the ones I didn't like or received any negative comment.

The final step was an attempt to round out my portfolio. In my mind, a wedding is a long day, filled with many details, and a wide range of required photographs. I wanted my portfolio to show the ability to capture as many facets of the wedding as possible. I made sure to include some Bridals, First Dances, Wedding Cake and Ceremony photos. I also made sure to include a variety of lighting situations. When I uploaded the photos, I used the statement of purpose to provide a bit more detail about the image. For instance SE08 was titled "Oops, Wrong Aisle" or SE02 was "First Dance"

With that said, I've posted my passing portfolio to my member gallery:

I'm sure it was me that mentioned it but I'm not sure which thread it was in.

I saw the title of this thread I figured it would be a good place to put a link to my portfolio so that anyone looking to submit their images would have something to compare to.

The way you see the images posted is the order in which I submitted them. I put a lot of thought into where the images went in the lineup with my strongest images at the beginning and end.

I received several critiques on the portfolio from different photographers and with their help I made through on my first try.

I hope this helps and good luck to everyone with your submissions in the next round.

This should turn out to be a very useful thread for people looking to become certified.

Great work Vance! I expected nothing less. Are you coming to Imaging to take your test in January?

okay, here are my images: http://www.ppa.com/community/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=123477056

looking back there are some definite changes I would've made if I would've given myself more time to prepare before the deadline ;)

Here's a link to my member gallery showing my passing portfolio:
Wish I had known the images would post in reverse order so for those of you who are concerned about the sequence load the images from last to first.
Questions and comments are welcomed.

nicely done, Adam!

And the same goes for me, feel free to critique. I'm sure it can help others when selecting their images.

Here is what I know I did wrong: I over analyzed how many of each category to select. For some reason I broke my 20 down to each kind: newborn, senior, wedding, portrait, etc. This really constricted my choices. B/c I waited until the last minute I didn't have time to go and select better images. I probably would've scrapped several of the ones I used for different ones. But it doesn't matter now :)

With image submission approaching, thought it would be good to have some more people add passing portfolios to the list to view: These were submitted this past February, Listening to the critiques and pointers in the CPP gallery was a great help. http://www.ppa.com/community/forums/album.php?albumid=766,
