SEPPA scores are posted at http://www.4seppa.com/2010%20Print%20Scores.html.

I want to take time to thank Keith Howe for his help on my images. I know he helps many others as well. I certainly could not have done this without his help and am grateful.

I have two seals going to Nationals. My prints scored 81, 80, 77 and 76.

So, what do I do now? Do I send all 4 prints on and hope the other two will do better or do I start working on two replacement images?

Thanks,
Chontelle

Chontelle,

Congratulations! I am very proud of you. I took a look at the SEPPA scores and it looks like it was a competition that set a high standard for excellance. You should be proud of how well you did. Can you post the 4 images on this thread so everyone can see them? I have looked at hundreds of prints for people over the last couple weeks and I would like a refresher on which ones were yours for sure.

As far as what to send to nationals, you don't have a lot of time till the deadline so that might make a difference. But this is how I usually think. If a print gets 79 at a regional, I would always send it on to international. There is a difference in how merits are detirmined at international judging, it is a simple majority. So if most of the judges vote yes then it gets a merit. At district it is done by score, so 5 judges could score 80,80,80,80, 75 and your average would be 79 or no merit. So always send a 79 on. Last year I did exactly that and got the merit at international. I would probably even give a 78 a second chance. A 76 or 77 I would probably either rework if I knew there were specific issues I could fix (did you get a chance to talk to any of the judges?) or scrap altogether and replace if the problem was not fixable. So at this point you need to decide how much time you have and what other possibilities you have for entries. If you decide you don't have time to rework or choose new then still send all four into national. It doesn't cost any less to have a partial case so you might as well take a chance. Be sure and order the critique.

Keith

Hi Keith,
I thought by looking at the scores across the board, it seemed like a tough competition. This is my first time entering regionals, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The print I liked the least (my case filler) actually scored higher than the one I like better...go figure.

The two prints that merited are the ones I had the highest hope for. I would have been disappointed if they had not merited. I am happy. I have a hard time finding images within my client work that have impact. I am looking forward to pushing myself over the next year to find 4 merit worhty images.

Here are the two that merited. Both were printed on watercolor paper. I will upload the final versions of the other two and post later.

Congratulations Chontelle! I love love love Sweet Dreams - beautiful image.
FWIW, I sent a print last year that got a 76 at SEPPA and it was put into the Showcase Book, and I sent something that scored an 83 at state, and it didn't merit. So who knows? :)

Thank you Steff! This has become my signature image. I've always shot it with older kids (eyelashes, looking down) but started with my babies last year.

For my family's sake, I may just send these other two prints to Nationals and hope for a miracle. :)

Thank you Diane!

Here are the other two images. I didn't have time to upload my final images. These were printed with comp density and the stray hairs cleaned up around the face on Sweet Bliss. I Won't Tell was printed on watercolor paper.

I wasn't able to attend judging so I do not know what the judges thought. Any and all feedback is welcome.

Edited: My files are way too big, here are the direct links if you want to take a look. I'll try to upload the smaller versions tonight.

I Won't Tell - 76 I had seen some nice, clean baby images in the loan and showcase books and thought I may be able to pull this off....didn't work.
