A photographer/judge did a quick recommendations of prints for competition. He selected 10-15, some I agreed with, some I didn't like as much as he did. He suggested that I ask around and get other opinions, so that's what I'm doing. These haven't yet been prepped for comp, they are just web images for advertising.

I'd like to hear if you think any of these would do well, what can be improved, etc.

I just don't have time to really comment on each image. I wish we could see all the images your friends recomended. I just wanted to remind you about the print mentoring available at IUSA if you are going. Contact Jim Dingwell for your chance to sign up for a one on one consult with an affiliate juror. I know Sunday is mostly full ( That's the day I will be mentoring0 but there are still a few times left on Monday & Tuesday. Several people on this forum have participated in the past and maybe they can chime in on whether it was helpful for them or not.

I'm not sure if I'll be attending Imaging this year, or not. I'm getting married and going to Europe for our honeymoon, and I'm not sure if I can fit another trip into my schedule. Plus, the competition I'm entering is in late January. I don't think I'd have enough time to rework and print images between the 2 competitions.

Jessica, I really will get to this eventually. We had a 4 day wedding in portland this last weekend and are headed out of town again tomorrow for a couple days for another wedding, plus it's really busy time right now. I think everybody is just feeling a time crunch leading up to Christmas. I will try to comment the first part of next week, if nobody else beats me to it.

Meanwhile, what are your goals and expectations. Everybody wants merits but will you be unhappy with anything less? Is this your first time entering?

I will not be happy with anything less than merits. I've entered 1 other time, meriting 2 of 4 and scoring a 79 and 78 on the other 2. One of my merited prints won the People's Choice award and 2 courts of honor.

Entering last year was a last minute decision. Due to some personal issues, I didn't think I was going to be able to attend the convention until less than a week before. I feel like I could have done better if I had started preparing my images more than a few days in advance.

When I was in photography school several years ago, I sat through print judging and loved it...learned tons! I missed print judging last year because they completed it almost a full day early. By the time I got to the convention judging was over. I will be able to get there early enough for the judging this year.

I'm trying to put more effort and energy into competition this year. I recently found out that I will be able to attend Imaging, and will be meeting with a judge to review my images. But, I'd like to have my images narrowed down and maybe even printed by then.

A lofty goal, not impossible but ambitious. There many many photographers with years of experience entering, even judges and jurors, who do not merit all 4 prints. The thing is, if it was easy what would be the point? If every print could merit, then what would a merit mean? Still it's great to aim high. Just realize how high you are setting the bar for your self.

I would recomend you don't print them in advance, unless you are anticipating that the mentoring sesssion will not provide you with any help or suggestions. The whole idea of those sessions is to help you pick prints and give you suggestions on artwork, cropping, printing, presentation etc. If your images are already printed then one of three things happens. You eat the cost of those prints when you redo them taking into consideration any input you get. Second you ignore the suggestions of the mentor and go with the images as you have already printed them. Or third, you anticipate that the juror will say it's perfect as is and not have any suggestions for you. When you walk in with ready to go prints, it implies to the mentor that you don't wnat any suggestions on the prints, just guidance on which ones to use. If you want to print up some 8x10's great, but I wouldn't suggest printing 16x20's. It's also helpful to the mentors to see the uncropped, unworked file.

Now to address the prints you have posted here. First - I am dissapointed that no one has made any comments. I hope it's just because everyone is busy. Maybe if I comment then someone else will chime in.
1) I like the lighting very much. But what is this really a photograph of? I see mostly the top of a head and striped sleeves. If this is a portrait of this person, I need to see more of the face and less of the top of the head. Years ago the stripped sleeves would have been a killer, but now with more contemporary styles of portraits they can work. I wouldn't mind the stripped sleeves if they added to the overall story being told. I see those sleeves and I think fun, funky, contemporary, but that's not the mood of this image- either through the lighting or what I can see of the expression. So for me the sleeves distract not add to the image.
2) going to take some work. First of all flip the image, then all those mortar lines act as leading lines from upper left corner right to your subject. You will need to tone down everything except her face and hair. As is she gets lost in a busy background. While artworking, increase the light direction to create a little stronger ratio. The challenges that can't be overcome with artwork are the rounded shoulders and the claw like hand position. I know in high fashion photography the models will often slump their shoulders. But those images are about the products they are selling not about making the model herslef look her optimum best. So for portrait work, posture is important.

3) Between the 2 images of this girl the first one has a better chance.

4) No - too many challenges to it scoring well. The mask of the face is nicely lit but the kicker is way too bright. Think about what is the most important thing in the image, it should be what draws your eye and usually does that by being the brightest area.

5) I like the mood and how it is perpetuated by the pose and location choice. the things that will keep this down is it's broad light and there are a few strong distractions. Her very busy shirt and the white window frame behind her head. I like how the window frames out her face but the white trim is the brightest area in the image. if you go with this one, tone down that window frame.

6) I don't like this one, but Holly does. She did agree with me that the vignetting is too heavy. Also the white crack in the barn siding needs to be fixed. The pluses on this image is how well the subjects pop out of the image, the nice triangular shape formed by their bodies, and the less comman subject matter of a father and daughter. What will hurt it is the flat light. Judges have to weigh the strengths against the weaknesses to come up with a score.

7) Again not an image I would choose to enter. The clothing is good but what is this location supposed to tell us about this family? And how does the happy family pose - holding hands - relate to the grungy city scene? Also in this small file it appears the eyes are pocketed, which indicates less then desirable light direction.

8) I wish there was more intesity in her eyes. Again the vignetting is a little heavy. While this is a very nice portrait and one I would be pleased to have hang in my studio, it's missing that something that makes me want to keep on looking (impact). So where your goal is merits only that makes me say no to this one.

9) Same issues here as with the first one. fun funky contemporary outfit that does not perpetuate the feeling of the image. Her expression and the location contrast with the outfit and not as part of a story about contrasts. Something to think about when spot coloring. Whatever you choose to color gets all the visual attention in the image. So here what you would be telling the judges is that you want them to look at her skirt.

10) Are you thinking of entering this as shown? Or just using the image out of this marketing piece. On my computor the whites are blown she has no neck. Her forehead and check are also gone. That blown highlights high contrast can work but it would then need to go farther. This halfway blown out looks like a mistake, not an intentional choice to focus attention on eyes and lips.

11) I like the shape formed by her hair as it frames her face and brings attention to her eyes. There are some issues with the artwork as it is. First you need to bring up the lower lid on her right eye ( camera left) There is more white below that eye then there is below the other. While that may be natural with her, it appears to be an artwork issue or a pose issue - bringing the chin too low. Next eyebrow and lips. It appears that something like portrature was run on this image and then erased back out of her eyes, hair and lower lip but missed being erased in her eyebrows and upper lip. Also her cupids bow has been highlighted but a little too heavy handedly. If draws attention that it's been done, then it's gone too far.

12) No - blown highlights, high key vingette has flared out the hair. It looks like the opacity was reduced in most of the image except the hair next to her face on her right side. Then an out of key grunge effect that draws attention to that area of the hair.

13) The clothing, the pose, the environment all work together to perpetuate the story. What will be a challenge to this image is the lighting. Although I am thinking the lighting might be better then what it looks like on this small low res file. Can you post some close up crops of each face? Is there any more room around the image in the original file? Also, while this IS the proper camera angle for a full length group, in this particular situation a little higher or lower camera angle would have gotten that horizon line out from behind the people. Higher would have been preferable because then they would have had all snow behind them. The other option of lower would have put all trees behind then and they wouldn't have popped out as well as against the snow. IF they had had red coats and sweaters then the camera angel you have would have been my first choice because the red would not have blended into the trees of the background so much.

If I had to narrow these down to 4, I think the strongest ones are 2, 11, 13 and 1.

Sorry for not being more clear. What I meant was that I wanted to have them in print form (not necessarily 16x20 and mounted). The reasoning is because I want to see exactly what the image looks like printed incase there's a color or density issue. I just got a new laptop and I'm working out those kinks.

On the contrary, I feel MUCH better now. I really, honestly appreciate your critique. And actually, I agree with almost everything you said. The exception being a comment about #1. I know this because I shoot mainly seniors and know the senior culture. But, the striped gloves are considered "emo" and "emo" kids are typically somber, emotional, etc. So, knowing that info, I think the hidden face and dramatic lighting does go with the clothing. But, I understand that judges may not know this information.

The images I posted were recommendations from a quick view of an online portfolio and with the exception of 2 images, are NOT ones that I would have chosen. I wish I would have gone with my gut and posted the pictures for critique that I liked better, but I was just thinking that maybe there was something about these images that I was missing, since they were chosen by a judge.

I'm going to post some of my favorites for critique. I'm open to hear from everyone. Keith, I'd love to hear from you too, but I don't want to be greedy with your time, so I understand if you're too busy. Thanks for the time you've already give me. :)
