View Full Version : CPP Study Group (interested?)

Are you looking to prepare for the CPP exam, but don't have anyone local to study with? Well, the forum can be a great place for forming a virtual study group. Whether you have a large (15+) group or even just a single study partner, it can be the difference between putting off the exam and passing with flying colors.

If you'd be interested in participating in a CPP study group that would "meet" online, or if you just want to find a fellow photographer who is going through the same thing you are.... put a post in this thread! Maybe a brief intro, and if you know when you're planning to take the exam, post that too.

NB: I created this thread after numerous requests on how to form a study group... so I know you photographers are out there. Don't be shy!

Discuss specific Chapters on the threads linked below
Chapters 1-3 (Getting Started, Camera, Lens) (http://www.ppa.com/community/forums/showthread.php?t=18187)
Chapter 4 (exposure, sensors, and film) (http://www.ppa.com/community/forums/showthread.php?t=18125)
Chapters 5-6 (developing the negative, printing in a darkroom) (http://www.ppa.com/community/forums/showthread.php?t=18126)
Chapter 7 (Color) (http://www.ppa.com/community/forums/showthread.php?t=18127)
Chapter 8 (setting up a digital darkroom) (http://www.ppa.com/community/forums/showthread.php?t=18128)
Chapter 9 (image editing)
Chapter 10 (digital printing)
Chapters 11-12 (organizing/storing your work, print finishing/display)
Chapter 13 (lighting!!!)
Chapter 14 (extending the image)
Chapter 15 (view camera)
Chapter 16 (zone system)
Chapter 17 (seeing photographs)
Chapter 18 (history of photography)

Betsy, I'm interested. I'm going to try to take the test at the regional IPPA convention at the end of October. If that doesn't work out I'll find somewhere else, maybe IUSA or I could drive over to CA. I have to drive somewhere quite a distance no matter what.

Hello Betsy. I am interested as well. I am not sure when or where I would take the exam and have not yet spoken to the PPA liaison for Texas.

I want to make sure I am focusing on the correct material for the exam. So far I have read Photography 9e, and The Photographers Handbook. I am going back over Photography 9e and the online quizes right now.

It would be great to be part of an online study group!

Ok, so here's the plan... the "recommended" reading for CPP is Photography 9th edition by Barbara London.

And I'll let you guys fight it out as far as who's coordinating things.. but it sounds like we have enough to start a study group. Anyone want to "be in charge" ? :D

Maybe if everyone asks really nicely, Mark L. might repost, or get Michael to see if a sticky could be make of all of the questions Mark did awhile back. I had already taken the test when he did it, but I know his study questions helped alot of people. Just a suggestion. :)

I'll let you guys decide, but when I was part of a CPP study group, we started by discussing each chapter of the book (I think week by week each chapter). That could easily be done here on the forum...

Here are the chapters of the 8th edition. (http://learnwithbetsy.com/blog/2007/photography-london) Someone with the 9th edition want to just list off the chapters here? To see how much variance there would be... so you guys can decide whether it will work that way.

Now that we have a bunch of people interested, would our fearless leader like to set us up with a game plan? Also, I was thinking that it might be fun for those attending IUSA to set up a fun get together. Just a chance to meet face to face...thought I would throw that out there.

There's barely enough time to discuss a chapter each week before Imaging. Based on my experience with the 8th edition, you could feasibly discuss several chapters in one week. Here's my suggestion:

1. Getting started (week of Sept 28)
2. camera (week of Sept 28)
3. lens (week of Sept 28)
4. exposure, sensors, and film (week of Oct 5)
5. developing the negative (week of Oct 12)
6. printing in a darkroom (week of Oct 12)
7. color (week of Oct 19)
8. setting up a digital darkroom (week of Oct 26)
9. image editing (week of Nov 2)
10. digital printing (week of Nov 9)
11. organizing and storing your work (week of Nov 16)
12. print finishing and display (week of Nov 16)
13. lighting (week of Nov 23)
14. extending the image (week of Nov 30)
15. view camera (week of Dec 7)
16. the zone system (week of Dec 14)
17. seeing photographs (week of Dec 21)
18. history of photography (week of Dec 28)

That leaves the first weeks of January for you to discuss anything else you still have questions on before taking the exam at IUSA.

Michael_Gan
09-23-2009, 03:41 PM
#13 may need more time as most candidates who do not pass the images have the biggest problem with this.

Also, as a big suggestion. When you go through the book, I would recommend that all of you apply the principals of the book with how you would approach this information in real world applications. If you try to memorize the book in order to take the exam (like we all did in school), you will be in for a big surprise. This written exam is designed for what you should be doing in your every day practice.

If that is the case, I wonder if 8 would be worth buying if you have 6. Perhaps Michael can answer.

Michael_Gan
09-25-2009, 01:38 AM
The exam questions were authored in 2006, before the 9th edition came out. There were 300 questions assembled. Less than about half of them have been used, and we are in the process of getting rid of as many of the "ambiguous" questions.

Let me repeat what I previously mentioned. That is, many candidates are surprised that the questions don't match what is in the book. That is because the questions are derived from the book, but are reworded to fit real world applications. Bottom line is that you need to practice good basic techniques in photography with your clients so that you can understand the difference between theoretical photography, and real world conditions photography. We want you to understand by doing;)

The way the certification process is set up, is once you have the written exam passed, we expect all of you to carry on what is in the test over to your image submissions in terms of lighting, color, composition, posing, ambient control, expression and density. This is all practical knowledge stuff that will lengthen your career in photography.

Cindi, no one has stepped up as willing to be "in charge" (Adam volunteered, but he hasn't been back online maybe?). How about I do this -- I'll make a discussion thread for each chapter. Then you guys can discuss your questions, topics, etc on there.

Another option would be to do a group chat once a week to talk about the chapters in real-time. But that would require more planning (by someone in the group). Anyone want to do this?

I think the real-time chat would be a good idea. I am willing to step up and organize things if anyone is interested.

I do think we need to get things moving since we have folks wanting to take the test at Imaging.

I am re-posting the schedule that Betsy put up earlier:
1. Getting started (week of Sept 28)
2. camera (week of Sept 28)
3. lens (week of Sept 28)
4. exposure, sensors, and film (week of Oct 5)
5. developing the negative (week of Oct 12)
6. printing in a darkroom (week of Oct 12)
7. color (week of Oct 19)
8. setting up a digital darkroom (week of Oct 26)
9. image editing (week of Nov 2)
10. digital printing (week of Nov 9)
11. organizing and storing your work (week of Nov 16)
12. print finishing and display (week of Nov 16)
13. lighting (week of Nov 23)
14. extending the image (week of Nov 30)
15. view camera (week of Dec 7)
16. the zone system (week of Dec 14)
17. seeing photographs (week of Dec 21)
18. history of photography (week of Dec 28)

So, if everyone could read the Getting Started, Camera, and Lens chapters, we can discuss those later this week. For those interested in real-time discussion group, we will need to settle on a day. Since we need to stick to the time deadline, I am not going to wait for very long before selecting the date. If you have a preference, please let me know ASAP.

BTW, I hope no one minds the "take charge" attitude, but I am getting the feeling if someone doesn't do it, we will never get going.

I posted our study schedule a few posts back in this thread. Just read a few back and you should find it. The book is called Photography by Barbara London, 9th Edition. I also posted a link earlier in the thread to a copy of the book if you need to see the cover.

Right now we are working on the chapters Getting Started, Lens, and Camera. You should get started reading those ASAP, as we will be moving on next week. There is supposed to be a thread for discussions, but it seems to have disappeared. I will be creating a new one. That will be the place to post discussion, and or questions. Please make sure to post in the thread appropriate to that weeks chapters. Our plan is to get through the entire book by the end of December, so that those who wish to take the exam at Imaging may do so.

I am the organizer of the study group, so if you have any questions, please feel free to message me.

Welcome to the group, it is great to have you here!

Sara,
Go ahead and participate...there are quite a few of us that don't have a test date set. We are going to move through the book pretty quickly, but it will give you a really good base to work with when you are ready to set your actual date. Those who participate in study groups generally tend to do better on exams.

I am the organizer of the group, so if you have any questions feel free to message me. If you have specific questions about the exam those are better answered by Michael or Betsy.

Just a reminder that we will be moving on to Chapter 4 tomorrow. There hasn't been any discussion on the first three chapters, so let's make a goal to get some discussion going for the next chapter.

I know that several people (myself included) are still waiting on books. If we need to, we can readjust our schedule so that everyone can catch up. It seems as if actual participation may be down. If there are still people that plan on participating in discussions that still want to take the test at Imaging...could you PLEASE let me know? If there isn't, then I am going to go ahead and push our schedule back to accommodate those still waiting for books.

Also, I have a specific plan set up for real-time discussions (thank you Betsy), so if anyone is interested, please send me a PM.

Hope everyone's reading is going well. As always, if anyone has questions, feel free to send me a message.

Didn't know it started???? Am looking for the thread now...

Just joined PPA and looking at the certification path. I'm interested as well.

I live on Long Island (the island west of New York City) -- if anyone is around here, drop me a note.

Thanks Betsey! This is great.

For anyone in the Chicago area, my fellow photographer friend is heading up a study group here alternating between her Edgewater studio and also at Calumet Photo in Oak Brook.

If interested, let me know and once dates have been set I'll be glad to share the info.

I am interested. I have no idea when I will take the test. I guess that really depends on how long it takes me to get through the study materials.
Thank you.:p

I am interested in having a study group. For the moment I do not know when I am going to take my examination. I am reading The book Photography written by London, Stone and Upton. Last week I stopped in Chapter Five. Now I am reviewing.

I'm in another group but this may help you with your independent study...

It's for the 9th Edition but should work until the 10th is set up
