keith - i'm hoping you'll see this post (and anyone else who wants to offer advice!!!) since now i know you're a glass man.
i have this image and one other to try to get ready for competition. after i collect your helpful remarks i'll be better prepared to make a decision about which to enter (or not).

wow. getting rid of that dark background was like letting in a breath of fresh air. i'll work on the edits and post it tomorrow. thanks again for all of the help.
