Here are my scores and prints:

Where We Goin'? - 80
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/heathersmith75/NH%20Comp%20Prints/Shadow_working4.jpg

Sir Winston - 77
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/heathersmith75/Certification/16.jpg
This print was actually pulled out by the judges this morning during the judges' critique - they said it would have gone higher with a different crop - that they saw too much 'prop' and wanted less of the bench and more of the dog. They said the print quality was beautiful and the dog was great, but wanted to see it cropped.

It Ain't Easy Being Green - 81
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/heathersmith75/NH%20Comp%20Prints/glasses_final_4.jpg
This print was actually read with the wrong title (something like "The Clouds Parted For the Sun" or something like that)... scored an 80. Then they realized it was read with the wrong title, brought it back around, and it scored a 81.

This was my first time attending NHPPA conference and I loved it! It was great meeting all of you -- sitting for the CPP exam with some of you, and cheering each other on. Congrats to Carol and Jeff! I had no idea this was Carole's first time entering. You are both so generous with your time and talent to this profession and to other photographers - so very well deserved! Keith - loved your 96 image -- every time I went by the print racks, people were admiring and studying it. I was so impressed with all the ourppa entrants. Don - you should post "Grief" - think everyone would love to see the "Artist in You". I also worked with the print committee the day of competition -- they were all so amazing -- welcoming me and helping me out as the newbie. I had one print score 83, 3 78s and a 75. I had one other print -- that needed to be remade but it didn't arrive in time -- it actually arrived about an hour after I left on Saturday, oh well -- maybe a good entry for PPANE! My wedding business, Natural Expressions, had two albums merit as multi maker albums and one received a Fuji Masterpiece Award! To top it all off ----- the speakers were fantastic! Thanks to all of you for welcoming me, helping me out and coaching me along with my entries.

Keith, I wanted to tell you how much I love "Momma told me not to marry a sailor" It came around with the title and I fell it love with it. For me the title along with the image had great impact. I think mostly because I am married to a sailor and it hit home:) . Congratulations to you on all your prints and NHPPA award!!!

As President of NHPPA, I got to pick the theme for the year. I chose - "The Artist in You". So I chose images to enter that were totally different (except for 1) than what I had entered in the past. I entered images for humor, self expression, fun & to challange the judges. I was not concerned about scores, but very pleased with the results.

1. Grief - 86 - A self portrait, inspired by a bronze casting by the same name - Kodak Gallery, digital.

http://www.chickphotography.net/Image/nhcomp08/DonChick_DC_lores.jpg

2. Face to Face - 84, Taken while lecturing in VT. The flash didn't go off and this was what the modeling lamps produced. Then I copied it and mirrored the image.

http://www.chickphotography.net/Image/nhcomp08/DonChick_DW_lores.jpg

3. Head'n Out - 81, Taken on the way out to the Isle of Sholes, 5 years ago. I have always love this image.

Also, the variety of subjects is great.

Here are the other 2 images

4. How Much Was That 8x10! - 80 - Totally for the humor of it!!!

http://www.chickphotography.net/Image/nhcomp08/DonChick_QJ_lores.jpg

5. Posing for Posterity - 77 - I used this from the session as it's a little different.... I like it, the judges found reasons not to score it an 80....

There you go! Enjoy.

This was my second competition. I hit my goal of 2 blues this year, 3 next maybe?? I am thinking of sending "Eye on you", "Jeepers Creepers" and "I feel Pretty" (Last years blue) onto Nationals. I just need a case filler.

I Feel Pretty

Straight Curves got a 79 and had some print quality issues? Is it worth sending onto Nationals if reprinted?

Side Note:
Who has the OURPPA Group photo from the banquet? Is it going to be posted here?

John I would think so but I have a couple of suggestions. A subject like this screems to be large to me, is there a reason you choose to make it so small on a horz board? Can you tone down the glare on the tile looking area (2nd up on left), or is there more to the image? The glare is the brightest spot on the image and therefore is the center of interest and it is cropped through it. There are a few easy fixes along the top center where the joints look like they don't fit tight and are dirty. Is it tack sharp throughout (if not it might be a good canidate for lucius ran on a dup layer and then lower the opacity till it is just "seasoned to taste". I didn't see the print so I don't know what the print quality issues were but does it have clean Blacks and Whites?

Don,

Grief is Awesome. One of my favorites from the competition.

John

John,

Thank you. It was a very emotional image for me to create.

I liked your "Straight Curves" image too. As I recall Keith, that one had good print quality, although I didn't get right up on it and look.

I wish the prints were able to be on display for another day. I don't always get to take a close look at each (being on the Board and working at the Conferences) and the next thing I know they are packed away....

Dennis, thanks for sharing your beautiful images!

Nylora your son is going to be a heart breaker! Your daughter is also gorgeous and nice job with your first painter image.

I feel like I have missed alot of people because this thread has moved sooo fast. I want to congratulate veryone who entered I know there is alot of work and sometimes stress involved. I also know the expense involved in the printing and sending the images. I think competition is great because we all learn from it.

Noelle,

Thank you. At 13 the phone already rings off the hook with the girls calling which BLOWS MY MIND because when we were kids we were NOT allowed to call boys under any circumstances!
Thanks for the kind words about the painter image, it was a nice photograph but I just wanted to try one in painter and this is the one I decided to "play" with. It will hang in my living room now. :D

Auralee,

Thank you!

Noelle,

You don't look old enough to have a 19 yo!!! Thanks for the tip though! My husband wants to build a farmers porch so that he can sit and clean his guns on it when the boys start coming around for my daughter. But I like the idea of the fly swatter for the girls! Much cheaper and probably just as effective if used properly! :D

My dad DID THIS on my first date! He's a redneck ex-DC cop, and decided it was the perfect time to clean his shotgun. My date had trouble talking the entire time we were in the house. (Of course, it didn't stop him from trying to cop a feel during the movie (E.T.!) , so it was fairly ineffective, I think. :) )

Hi Keith,

I was not in North Conway during the competition. Straight Curves was printed with a Matte Finish with a black and white paper and a gray scale ink. It is also uncoated. What I was told is that it washed out under the competition lights (print quaity, maybe more print type than quality). I was told that there was a lot of conversation about the image. I was told that your point about the image needing to be larger and vertical was also brought up. The judges liked the detail in the print. One comment I was tolds that it looked like an 8X10 pasted to the board. Then they checked and saw that it was printed.

The image is about as large as I can make it without it getting too pixelated. I will try to rework and repost. I shot the original image in Boston. I should be able to do a reshoot if I cannot work it properly.

Thanks,
John

I would recommend reshooting. It's not as sharp as it needs to be to get the score you want. Use a tripod and mirror lockup and make it about 2/3 bigger and you'll be golden with the same capture. They tried hard to give you lovin' on that one, but the softness was the hill they could not climb.

I am going to sound like a broken record here. John, Every choice you make for a competition print should enhance the image or perpetuate the story. This image is about the stark crisp geometric forms and the tonality of white to gray to black throughout the image. I have not seen your image but I am willing to bet matte paper did nothing to enhance the image or perpetuate the theme. I have never entered a print on matte paper, but I have used watercolor paper - which of course is matte. I choose watercolor paper when I want to illustrate the softness of the subject - like the image of the senior girl I entered this year. It was all about the softness of her skin and sweater. So a matte paper enhanced that velvety look. Your image needs to be about crispness of the forms and shapes. I think a high gloss paper might have tipped it over to an 80. JMO FWIW.

Mark, Keith

Thanks guys. Makes sense to me. Recapture so that I can redo sounds like the best course of action. Better camera and a tripod will help. The original is far too small to make larger.

Sounds like a road trip some evening into Boston. Rowes Warf Hotel isn't going any where any time soon. Sue will be bummend out that we will need to go in town. Probably not in time for PPA, but certainly for PPANE.

Don,
Do you know anyone at MFA? Why don't we try to get special entrance before opening to public? PPANE people want to provide more educational opportunities, and this maybe has possibilities; we could call it an NHPPA/PPANE/NEIPP special event.

As temporary DoE, the other day I emailed one PPANE officer, and apparently fallen on deaf ears, as no reply yet to an idea. Frustrating, to say least.

Many probably have no clue who Karsh is/was. I saw his exhibit there maybe 15 years ago, and have the book with beautiful lady on the cover. To see the b/w of Churchill about six feet high is not to be forgotten - what an image!

I try to go to MFA once, and often twice, a year; I took Bob Raiche to Ansel Adams exhibit, October 26 on my birthday, the year before he died. Gotta take some time like that and for oneself.

Let's make it happen. I'll contact the person I was given by another photographer friend, whom I thought had a relationship with Karsh. He replied to me that it was all business, as he was asked to help Karsh photograph Arthur Feidler in 1975, and then some other notables!

Stick around, I copy & quote:

"This exhibition of 60 photographs of Georgia O’Keeffe and 18 works by the artist will address the relationship between her art and photographs made of her over the course of a long career. For the first time, the exhibition will pair paintings and photographs to establish two opposing public images of the artist. Georgia O’Keeffe and the Camera will include works by famous photographers such as Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Eliot Porter, Todd Webb, and Arnold Newman. The exhibition will also include examples of O’Keeffe’s paintings and works on paper that mark major moments in the development of her art: the early abstract drawings, the first landscapes in New Mexico from the 1930s, and the late architectural studies of her homes at the Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu." end quote.

I chaired the PPANE programming committee that booked the late Arnold Newman to speak in September of 2000!
If one does not know, O'Keefe & Stieglitz were married.
I have a few O'Keefe framed posters in my home. I needed some narrow vertical images; I cut the borders and text, dry mounted, and laminated with Seal's canvas texture print guard and framed flush. They look like very stunning oil canvases!

I'd drive the 80-90 minutes to see that exhibit!!! I am under two hours to Boston, easy day trip.

I'll initiate communicating with MFA contact I was given. The public dates are at www.mfa.org

Out of area people are allowed!

Well, that's great.

I received a reply that I can book a personally narrated tour of the Karsh Exhibit; with up to 25 people, it'll cost the regular museum admission fee plus about $300 donation. So, as I had a far out idea, the regular group discount is $2.00. Conclusion: gather a few friends and visit at one's convenience, on the first weekend of a month, with a BoA credit card.

Actually, yes, I think I am! :) I don't think I'm going to Imaging 2009. There's just too much going on with the house, and we'll just be finishing up the construction (I HOPE!) and I spend WAY too much money at that trade show. And it's all Steff's fault. So blame her for me not going to Phoenix. But yeah, I do really want to come to NH again and see everyone.

So 2 things:

In addition to Don, Nylora, Dennis and everyone else involved, I'd like to acknowledge my wife and Conference Chair Lorraine for her hard work and great job. Also, Candace Pratt Stiteler and her husband Fred for all the help they gave us.

And thanks to Fred for doing the work on the below images of Don and Nylora for our banquet theme 'The Artist in You'. LustreColor made 20x30 Gallery Wraps of them that were unveiled at the banquet! They got to take them home! Thought you'd like seeing them!
