Are any of these worth my time to try to work up for competition presentation?
Thanks!

ETA: Okay, I'm a little loopy today. I have 48 hours to decide if I'm entering.

Wait, why 48 hours? What am I forgetting? Should I be doing something today about comp? Because I just ordered my prints...

Of the images you have posted here.... I see them scoring the average or above average category. Is that what you want to know? Or do you want us to pick some for entering?

Steff, if I'm going to enter, the lab said to get my order in by Sunday evening.

Don, I'd love to know if there are any you think have a chance of 80+ if I work on them and what I could do to help them get there. :D

I was going to just not enter, but I hate the thought of not entering at all. :( But I don't want to embarrass those closest to me in VPPA by entering poo. :p Can I pull the pity card for someone to help handhold me? LOL! I've been slack because I had to have a mass removed from my ovary today, so I've been preparing for surgery, among a ton of other things. So I had to put print comp on the back burner, especially until I found out how much my portion of the surgery we'd have to pay was after insurance.

Or if anyone is bored and wants to check out my website, www.mcgeephotography.com for any possibilities. I really want to enter, but only if I will do well. And yes, I know how ridiculous that sounds, but I'd rather wait until next year than make a fool of myself. :p And looking at my own images, it's hard to see if anything even has potential at all.

Tracy,
Of the ones you have shown, which do YOU think are the strongest?

Quite frankly, today I'm having one of those moments where I hate all of my work and think I need to sell my equipment and go back into banking. :p

Personally, I loved the engagement on the beach shoot, but I remember there being lighting reasons (which I can't recall exactly) whey they wouldn't merit. But I had only shown one of those I believe. And I also like the #7 of mom and baby with white fabric. I love the cake shots, but don't know if something like that is comp worth or just cutsie.

The very first one is one of my all time favorites, but I know there is a huge contrast difference. And while I like contrast, I know it doesn't fly well in competition.

I love how happy she is in #2, but again, don't know if it's worthy. I love the feel of #3, but she's missing an eye, so I don't know if the moodiness will fly with a missing eye.

I like #9 because it's all candlelight, but I always love detail shots. However, me loving detail shots don't make them something I should/could enter.

I really like #8 because I ran and grabbed their rings for that one as soon as they brought out desert. But I don't know if the lighting on it stinks.

I like #10 but again, don't know if the lighting of it kills it.

Light is coming from the wrong direction.

I just took a quick look at your site and first gallery, but I like that first image in your newborn gallery better than the mom and baby shot here.

Rephrasing.:) ........I suspect you are just super-anxious, and that's not a bad thing. It took me about 4 years to get up the nerve to enter my first competition...average score for 4 prints was probably 76.:D

PS
I think #15 might be the strongest image.

Dave, #15 is actually my favorite from that session, but what about the sunset light on it?

Thanks, Teya! I do like that one, but she is the maternity in #1. I had so many from that maternity I hated the thought of not using any of those. But if the contrast diff in #1 is too much, I may just use the mommy/baby one instead.

Tracy,

Don't be nervous. Or rather, go ahead and be nervous, and know that everyone else is, too. And that even if your print tanks, nobody will remember that part because they will all be thinking about their own prints. And when it does happen, all anyone will be thinking is, "dang! I hope mine doesn't tank! Oh no, what if mine tanks? What if they hate it? What if I am totally blind to my own bad work? What if I have no clue what I'm doing and have been delusional about entering anything? Why am I even in this business? What was I thinking? Why didn't I get that accounting degree like my mother wanted? Thank god I know how to type. Oh no! That's my print?! Yikes! What did they say? 74? Oh thank god. <sigh>"

Or maybe that's just me. :)

(I'm already at the "blind to my own work" stage, and I haven't even got the prints back from the lab yet.)

I am new to comp and ourppa -- but the two that I like are the guitar shot and the baby toes with cake. For the guitar shot I would see in the original file if there is any detail in the shadow side of her face. I would also try and get some hair to cover her ear. For the baby toes I would try flipping it to see if that reads better, burn down the cake for detail in the side of it and then play around with the light to be sure the foot is the obvious subject.
then you need a really cute name ---havent thought of one yet -- but will keep thinking. advice from a newbie - for what it is worth

Okay, so I've decided to not enter this time around. I attended some of the convention last year, but had no idea what any of anything really meant. So this year, knowing a little more about what the ribbons etc. mean, I will observe and absorb and then spend at least one day every month going out on my own to concentrate on next year's competition. I would have to get the prints ordered, like now. I have no idea how to print down, what to burn, where to begin, mounting, titles, stokes..... Plus, I don't feel anything of mine is anywhere near good enough to enter. Yes, some will call me slack or chicken, but I had to get my surgery behind me and had other things to concentrate on. Plus, I'm not even for sure how much of convention I'm going to be up for. I have so much air in my lungs and I am so swollen all over from surgery, I'm quite miserable. Soooo, I'm bummed about not entering, but I promise at the very least to sit through and listen to print judging and I promise to enter a full case next year. :) So my goal between now and next year's convention is to work towards my CPP and work on rock solid images for next February. :D

Are we allowed to take tape recorders and such to print judging? And I know I've SEEN people do it, but are we allowed to photograph the entries as they hang?

Hi Tracy, If you get some prints together that you're happy with you could always enter Nationals - this would give you until early June or so.

It has some slight problems and it's good that you are observant. The worst part about the light is that the hand comes back out of the shadow. However, I have seen much worse...it's still a nice image.:)
