Imaging USA 2018 will be here before you know it...three-to-six days of everything photography, including learning, networking, shopping, and partying! It's all going down in the Music City, Nashville, TN, January 14-16, 2018 (Pre-Con classes January 11-13).

Imaging USA is known far-and-wide as THE place to see some of the best speakers in the photography industry, as they take you on deep-dives into every photographic and business topic you could want to learn more about. In order to get you even more excited (if that's possible!), PPA is going to spend the next several months highlighting our 2018 Imaging USA speakers.

Let's Meet...

Thomas Dodd

Thomas Dodd is an Atlanta-based visual artist and photographer who has developed what he calls "painterly photo montage." In this method, he uses editing software and crafts elaborately textured pieces that have a very organic and decidedly non-digital look to them. His work often has mythic and quasi-religious themes, paying homage to Old Master art traditions while also drawing from psychological archetypes. Resembling paintings, his pieces are entirely photographic in nature, fusing many images into a cohesive whole, and he has had numerous exhibitions around the world.

Thomas' exhibition schedule has included Poland, Germany, Romania, New York City, Mexico City, Orlando, San Antonio, Seattle, Washington, DC, Atlanta and is continually growing. His photographs have been featured in many magazines, on book and album covers and he frequently teaches workshops and webinars on photo-editing and marketing for artists. Ironically, Thomas was best known as a musician and harpist in the 1990s and did not start his visual artistry until 2005. Today, his images are basically a visual equivalent of the music he composed, and the results continue to astound and amaze.

Speaker Sessions:

Sun, Jan. 14: 6:45-8pm: The Painterly Photo

Q&A:

What is your life motto? "You are never defeated as long as you can get back up again." Inspired by this eternally-optimistic dude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhRUe-gz690
What was your first concert? Bruce Springsteen in 1976 (Born to Run tour) which completely spoiled me- I thought that from then on all concerts would last 3 and a half hours long and have 4 or 5 encores... Quickly found out that wasn't the case at all.
What would be your advice for photographers who are just starting their career? The most important thing that you should do as an artist is enjoy what you do. Every step of the journey. It doesn't matter what you do. Don't do things for money. Do them because you love them and then the money will come.

Thomas Dodd is just one of the many amazing speakers you'll get to meet and learn from at Imaging USA 2018! Registration is online now so take advantage of the Early Bird rates for passes and your hotel!

8-9:30am: 5-minute Photography - Booray Perry Cr.Photog., CPP (sponsored by Miller's Professional Imaging)
In any circumstance, in any setting, a good photographer should be able to capture a great portrait. Yet on-location shoots can make even the most talented professionals panic. Never fear! Booray Perry provides you with a step-by-step system that will eliminate the stress and worry of on-location photo-shoots and give you the confidence you need. Learn how to assess your location and determine which path to follow to achieve great images. This class will help you explore what to do when using natural light, bounce flash, or off-camera light. Booray will also conduct a demo to show you what he does and how he reacts each time a new element changes his image. You'll discover how to work through them and produce a final, award-winning result. Whether you shoot weddings, Seniors, events, or portraits, you will learn how to work faster and smarter, on-location and under pressure, for results that will wow!

5-6:15pm: Pro-tween-ographer: How to become 'THE' Photographer Tweens Choose - Kay Eskridge M.Photog.Cr., CPP (sponsored by Kodak Alaris)
Do you want to plan, advertise, and implement portrait experiences that will bring in year-round cash flow? Do you want to feel good about what you do as a professional photographer? Do you want to give your clients something to rave about? If you answered "Yes" to any or all of these questions, this is the program for you! Today's social media has changed how young people deal with self-image, especially girls in their tweens (ages 9-12). During this program, you'll learn how to embrace this demographic and position yourself as the Tween Choice in your community. Kay will cover different types of marketing approaches, various portrait programs to offer for this specific niche, and the psychology needed to ensure a successful portrait experience. You will learn how to successfully manage a pre-portrait consultation and then get a live demo, showing the appropriate lighting and posing for this age range. Discover how to stay true to your craft and your clients. After this program, you'll be equipped to make your tweens and their parents happy, while producing portraits that everyone will love.

6:45-8pm: The Painterly Photo - Thomas Dodd
In this demonstration, acclaimed photographer and digital artist Thomas Dodd will show you the methods and techniques he uses to get his signature "painterly" look. Thomas will share his philosophy and how this artistic effect is not achieved solely in the editing process but rather how it begins even before the photograph is taken with important components like model and wardrobe selection, lighting techniques, and backdrop choices. Thomas has his own way to make you discover how intentional pre-shoot planning and a steady diet of classic art can contribute to the images you will create. Thomas will also show you how to manipulate color and light in a way that mimics painting of the Old Masters. In this program, you will learn Photoshop editing techniques and tips that will give your images that perfect embellishment, creating an artistic masterpiece. Thomas will even show you some of his finishing techniques, including how to add actual paint -and other materials- on top of the printed pixels. From initial planning to the actual painting and final touches, this class is a must as it will help you transform your photos from images to art!

Monday, January 15th, 2018:

You can't go it alone and be successful in your business (well, you can...but it's much harder...and did we mention lonely?) You need the support of your peers and, when it comes to connecting professional photographers, PPA offers a lot of opportunities.

PPA has amazing online education available to its members, of course, but sometimes it's best to get out from behind the computer! Take advantage of opportunities to Be More Connected that involve directly interacting with an instructor and/or fellow photographers live and in person. If face-to-face, in-person learning works better for you, then PPA has you covered!

  • Super 1 Day Events: Super 1 Day events occur bi-annually for two weeks and are facilitated by professional photographers looking to share their knowledge and experience with others. During Super 1 Day events, you get the opportunity to take part in day-long workshops covering a huge cross-section of topics. These are fantastic opportunities to hone your skills in addition to networking with your peers! Register now for Super 1 Day!

  • PPA Affiliate Schools: PPA has partnered with photography schools all over the country-and even in others- to provide professionals with in-person educational opportunities for one week each year. And like Super 1 Day, taking advantage of classes offered in these Affiliate Schools is not only a great way to become a better photographer, but also a great way to meet other pros just like you!

  • Photographic Competitions: All artists need to feel a sense of belonging and, according to Anne Geddes, PPA gave her "the fellowship and opportunities for my work to be reviewed and judged by my peers through photographic competitions, and it helped build my confidence and credibility as a photographer." Anne says, "There is a camaraderie that comes from entering your best images in print competitions. The judges are all walking up and 'sniffing' your print, as we used to joke. A judge says, 'You know, I don't think it's good enough for...' It's character building." PPA competitions begin at the start of the year at the district level and continue to the International Photographic Competition every summer.

  • Imaging USA: The world's largest, strongest and longest-running photography expo and convention continues to get bigger and better! 2018 is set to be no exception. Imaging USA will set up shop in Nashville, Tennessee. That's right. We'll be invading the Music City for three amazing days (six with pre-con!) of Imaging USA, January 14-16, 2018. You can't help but Be More Connected with a trip to Imaging USA!

So get up, get out and get to learning! PPA is always adding ways to Be More Connected as a member. Learn more now at PPA.com/Connected.

Booray Perry had it figured out, or so he thought. After a 20-year career in radio, he retired from being a wacky morning man and moved to Florida to marry and start a family. He was a stay-at-home-Dad while his wife built a successful real estate business. When the economy downturned in 2007, his family found themselves starting over at which point Booray rediscovered his childhood passion, photography.  Today, he shoots approximately 100 weddings and events each year and teaches photography classes nationwide. Extremely involved within his industry, Booray serves on PPA's Online Content Advisory Committee, as a PPA Councilor and as the host of IPC Live. In 2014, he was a Platform Speaker for Imaging USA, and then a pre-conference instructor for Imaging USA 2015. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Tampa Area PPA, and is active in both Florida and Southeastern Professional Photographers Associations. The combination of Booray's ability to talk for hours, his humor, and experience make him a popular instructor and he's always eager to help fellow photographers on their path to success.

Nate Peterson, M.Photog., CPP

Twitter: npdp
Instagram: npdesignphoto

Sponsored By: White House Custom Colour

As a child, Nate Peterson was constantly doodling, never knowing this artistic talent would shape his career path. Formally trained in graphic design and visual communications, Nate then added photography to the mix and, with the introduction of the digital camera, fell in love with the craft.

Since then, he's been on a life-changing, nation-wide crash course, training with the leaders of the industry through PPA and state and local affiliates, WPPI, After Dark Education, and more, with the goal of becoming the premier portrait artist in his area. Nate's career has skyrocketed and with that, the expansion of his studio's personalized services, professional abilities, and boutique product options.

Today, Nate Peterson Design & Photography specializes in contemporary high school Senior portraits, sentimental family portraits, commercial product photography, and edgy sports images, based on the belief that a portrait is an artistic expression of its subject. Outside of his studio, Nate strives to help others find their photographic paths and stays active as a member of the American Society of Photographers, the Twin Cities PPA (where he served as a 2016 Board Member), the Wisconsin PPA, and the Indianhead WPPA Affiliate.

Speaker Sessions:
Mon., Jan. 15
8 - 9:30am The Grand Experience Experiment (Business, Inspiration)

Q&A:

What did you want to be as a kid when you grew up? A Disney animator
What was your first concert? Aerosmith. Floor tickets. Tripped on a wire track on the way in running toward the front row, but held my balance. Got crushed in the front against the gate for the next 2-3 hours. Vivid memories...
Coke or Pepsi? Sparkling Water/Club Soda/LaCroix - Gave up pop many years ago. But it was Pepsi growing up and Diet Coke in my adult years before I quit.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? "Just one more" as in one more pose, one more shot, one more look... to the client.
What has been your proudest moment? Completing a 5-year dream of leaving my full-time career and building a premier studio, purchasing and restoring a 100-year old commercial building for our studio and eventually selling our house to build a residence inside the studio building and getting my PPA Masters Degree and regional Senior Portrait awards all in the process. Now I'm just not sure what I want to do next. Rest maybe.
Most embarrassing moment: Very early in my photography career and as my previous career was winding down due to the economy and the future was uncertain, my co-worker and I found a new habit of leaving early on Fridays and heading to happy hour at the local sports bar/restaurant... After about four hours of sitting at the bar drinking, I got up to use the restroom. As I stumbled out back toward my barstool, I heard some kids excitedly yell "Hey Nate!" It was a family I had photographed a couple weeks before. I slurred a small conversation with them and probably left a very poor impression.
The good news is that was the beginning of the end for me with drinking. I decided if I were to make it in a small community with my name on the side of my building, I could no longer allow myself to be compromised like that. About a year later, I walked away from drinking all together. Life started getting better immediately... (not preaching... just sharing my experience.)
If you could have a theme song, what would it be? Most days I'm "You Got A Friend In Me" from Toy Story
What would be your advice for photographers just starting their career? Join the ranks of the professionals... Join their associations, such as PPA or local affiliates. Get to know handful of people whose imagery and business you admire. Learn from them. Listen to them. Implement what they teach you. And you can become the ones the next group of new photographers look up to and then give back to them. #mentorsrule

What do you most value in your friends? Deodorant.
What did you want to be as a kid when you grew up? I wanted to write movie screenplays. I actually have written some things I've never shown to anyone.
What is your most treasured possession? My first Hasselblad camera, 500C. I got it in 1979 and it had over 150,000 exposures when I got it. I worked it hard every day and put on another 350,000 exposures on it. It now sits on the mantel proudly having bought a house or two and a few cars.
What was your first concert? WAR, in 1973 (Cisco Kid, Low Rider, etc...)
What has been your proudest moment? I was really proud when I realized that I was either thanked or had work published in the books of 27 other photographers. Means more to me than anything I ever published under my name.

You may already have the art of photography down, but is your business where you'd like it to be? If you find yourself wanting to learn how to boost your bottom line, the PPA Business Challenge is for you!

The Business Challenge provides photography business owners with the information and tools they need to develop the foundation for a more profitable business over the course of one year. Not only do they receive the tools required to make changes to their business, but also step-by-step instruction and support from PPA mentors as they implement these changes.

We all know that photographers are entrepreneurs, small business owners with a passion for their craft. We also know that, more often than not, many photographers open their studios as artists, not having gone to business school, nor carrying a finance background. It is part of PPA's mission, as a nonprofit, to help our members understand and implement the basic business principles needed to maintain a sustainable studio.

The Business Challenge is meant to be a fun, interactive way for PPA members to integrate as much business acumen as they can in one year's time. There is work involved, as this "challenge" is meant for photographers who are serious about wanting to take their business to the next level. Participants will have tasks to complete and the opportunity to be active members of accountability groups and peer-to-peer mentoring.

"PPA's business advice is based on years of experience and successful business mentoring," says Angela Kurkian, M.Photog.Cr., CPP and Director of Education at PPA. "The Business Challenge helps our members be more business-confident. It helps them think and strategize as a savvy business person."

Kurkian led a presentation on the Business Challenge (pictured above) and its first year at this year's Imaging USA in San Antonio. Titled "4 Things You Need to Know to Be Successful", the group panel included Gregory Daniel, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, F-ASP; Mary Fisk-Taylor, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, ABI, API; and participants from the previous year's Business Challenge.

As an example of the kinds of takeaways you'll gain from the Challenge, they presented these four steps to success...
