Great article! But in addition, the personality of the photographer has to be correct for photographing children. There are photographers that are not able to be acting goofy, and totally uninhibited, a prerequisite for capturing the best image possible. For 20 or more years we have photographed a school for special needs children. It is some of the most rewarding work that I do. It is one of those jobs I would do whether I got paid or not. Knowing what you want for your and result, and committing to do absolutely anything to gain that result, causes the staff to ask me to give up photography to come and work for them every year. When you stop to really think about what we do as photographers, preserving a slice of time forever, it's just so exciting!
